The Vauxhall Astra VXR is a more extreme version of the GTC, and nothing embodies the visual changes more than the new model's exterior design revisions.

The Vauxhall Astra VXR gets a specially sculpted front and rear bumper, side skirts, aerodynamic roof spoiler and twin bumper-integrated tailpipes. Standard 19-inch wheels with 245/40 ZR tyres underpin the dramatic body, with 20-inch forged items available as an option for those customers who want to make their cars look even bolder.

The VXR shares much of its design with the GTC. Only three lines are used to create tension and define the outline of the silhouette. A fine, crisp line sweeps downwards from the front door to the bottom of the rear wing; a second line strikes through the door handle and stretches to the rear, emphasising the car's dramatic stance and broad shoulders. A third line follows the roof's clean, rakish silhouette.

Exterior colours include: Arden Blue, Carbon Black, Power Red and Summit White.

The Interior
The centre-piece of the Vauxhall Astra VXR's cabin is Vauxhall's all-new flat bottom steering wheel. Its diameter has been reduced from 370mm to 360mm compared with all other models in the Astra range, making the steering feel even more precise and direct. The handwheel's grip has been enhanced by packing supple sponge rubber around a magnesium/steel hybrid ring and then covering the entire wheel in premium, soft cross-stitched leather. The wheel is available with an optional heated rim, and features the VXR logo, as well as multi-function controls on its spokes.

Other VXR-specific features abound, including a unique sports gearlever and alloy-plated pedals with rubber studs for better foot grip. Glossy piano-black chronograph-inspired dial rings contrast against a satin-black background, while the wing-shaped upper instrument cluster flows back into the doors and armrests. Black headlining, VXR-branded floor mats, and door panel stitching in Arden Blue or Cool Pearl give the Vauxhall Astra VXR's interior a purposeful yet exclusive feel.

A new design of front sports seat, made with cutting-edge lightweight material is standard across the Vauxhall Astra VXR range. Mounted 17mm lower than in the Astra GTC (and 30mm lower than in an Astra Hatch) the seats give front occupants a heightened sense of connection with the car's chassis.

Made from a strong but agile polyamide/fibreglass composite, the seat shells are formed using an organic injection-molded sheet which due to its strength only needs to be 2mm thick, and contributes to a 45 per cent weight saving compared with a seat using a conventional shell.

As standard, all Astra VXRs get manually adjustable front seats trimmed in half Black Track cloth and half Morrocana fabric. However, two option packs are also available. The VXR Performance Seat Pack (£495) adds full electric adjustment, heated seats, a manually extendable front seat cushion and lumbar/side-bolster adjustment as part of a package that includes a total of 18 different seat settings.

In addition, a Full Leather Pack (£1150) is available, comprising the multi-adjustable electric seat with a high-quality leather finish, embossed with the VXR logo. Two versions of the leather seats are available, each of which has a vertical leather stripe in the centre, picked out in either Arden Blue stitching or a gloss leather with Cool Pearl stitching (with matching door panel stitching). The VXR logo is embossed into the upper part of the front seats, while the seat itself is perforated to provide an air circulation function.

CHASSIS
While the Vauxhall Astra VXR is based on the new GTC, it has benefitted from a raft of bespoke chassis modifications to cater for the significant boost in performance brought by the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, which produces 280PS and 400Nm of torque.

With its dynamics developed by Vauxhall's engineering team, led by ex-DTM star Volker Strycek, the Vauxhall Astra VXR will target the very best rivals in class for handling, grip and overall driving excitement.

Setting it apart from all other current Astras is a specially developed mechanical limited slip differential, which works on the front wheels. In conjunction with the GTC's sophisticated HiPerStrut (High Performance Strut), the LSD provides the Vauxhall Astra VXR with exceptional lateral grip and traction through the bends.

Further changes to the chassis include brakes developed by competition supplier, Brembo, standard fitment of Vauxhall's fully adaptive FlexRide damping system, uprated springs and new dampers developed between VXR and ZF Sachs.

Mechanical Limited Slip Differential developed with motorsport supplier
Drexler, who supply differentials to the motorsport industry, have worked with Vauxhall to develop a mechanical multi-plate limited slip differential for the Vauxhall Astra VXR.

The unit, derived from that used in the Corsa VXR Nürburgring Edition, creates a locking effect with a ramp angle of 45 degrees under acceleration and 90 degrees under deceleration. The locking effect improves traction when it's needed - such as under acceleration through bends or over changing cambers and surfaces - but the effect is relaxed off-throttle, when it's not required, making the steering more benign.

To cater for the improved traction brought by the LSD, the Vauxhall Astra VXR's Traction Control (TC) and Electronic Stability Control (ESP) systems have been re-tuned to ensure the best performance, even when the car is used on track or in wet conditions.

VXR and Brembo develop bespoke braking system
With cross-drilled and ventilated 355 x 32mm front discs, four-piston callipers and harder compound brake pads, Vauxhall and Brembo have co-developed a bespoke braking system to cater for the Vauxhall Astra VXR's 280PS performance.

Using 'floating discs', the brakes are made from two different materials, with a cast-iron rotor mounted on an aluminium disc bell. This helps combine the heat resistance from cast iron with the light-weight properties of aluminium.

The key advantages of the system are reduced heat build up during repeated braking, as well as an improvement in overall brake feel through the pedal. There has also been a significant weight saving compared with the system found in the GTC, with each front calliper weighing 5.1kgs (-2.8kgs) and each front disc weighing 4.2kgs less than on the standard coupe. This means a total reduction of 7kgs per front corner from the car's unsprung weight.

The brakes, as well as all other chassis elements, were tested on public roads and in the toughest of environments including the Nürburgring and Contidrom race tracks in Germany, as well as on ice and snow in Scandanavia, and in the searing Spanish heat at the Idiada test track.

Springs, dampers, roll bars and bushes all improved for greater performance

Compared with the 1.6-litre, turbocharged GTC model, the Vauxhall Astra VXR's springs have been stiffened by 30 per cent and the car lowered by 10mm at the front and rear, to allow more driver connection on road and track.

The Astra's clever compound crank/Watt's link rear suspension was also stiffened, as were suspension bushes all round to cope with the extra chassis loads. The front anti-roll bar's diameter increased by 5mm over the GTCs, again for added stiffness.

Working with motorsport manufacturer, ZF Sachs, Vauxhall developed bespoke damper settings for the Vauxhall Astra VXR, using larger diameter pistons to the GTC's. The suspension sub-frame also rests on special mounts, the elastic-kinematic nature of which improves steering agility and support even when subjected to extreme lateral forces through tight bends.

HiPerStruts improve steering feel and help reduce torque-steer
The Vauxhall Astra VXR is equipped with a version of Vauxhall's HiPerStrut, also found on all GTCs and the 325PS Insignia VXR.

By reducing camber change during cornering, the HiPerStruts improve grip, reduce torque-steer significantly and enhance steering precision, due to a shorter and more compact rotational axis. Each strut has a 44 per cent reduced kingpin inclination and a spindle length (or kingpin offset) reduced by 46 per cent. This in turn means less camber loss during cornering, and therefore more grip, while the shorter spindle quells torque-steer reactions.

Standard FlexRide provides drivers with ultimate control

Vauxhall's FlexRide adaptive damping system is standard on all Astra VXRs. Drivers have the choice of three separate chassis settings which can be selected at the push of a button. 'Standard' delivers all-round performance for a wide range of road driving, with 'Sport' stiffening the dampers for reduced roll and tighter body control.

Three modes of ESP to suit road and track driving
The Vauxhall Astra VXR's ESP (stability control) system offers three different modes. In its default mode, optimum safety is prioritised for everyday road conditions. 'Competitive' mode raises the threshold at which the automatic systems intervene, though when it senses a dangerous situation it will stabilise the car via the braking system. Finally, in 'ESP-off' mode, activated by pressing the button down for five seconds, the ESP system can be completely deactivated.

Two choices of unique wheel designs
As standard, the Vauxhall Astra VXR is equipped with flow-formed 19-inch alloy wheels with Pirelli 245/40 ZR tyres front and rear. However, customers can also opt for state of the art forged alloy 20-inch wheels, which weigh just 1.86kgs - 14 per cent less than the 20-inch rims available on the GTC model. The forging process used to make the lightweight rim creates a tougher material, allowing less aluminium to be used in its construction, and therefore reducing weight.

Combined with the savings in weight brought about by the Brembo discs, opting for the 20-inch rims on the Vauxhall Astra VXR gives drivers a total unsprung weight saving of over 14.5kgs across the front axle.

POWERTRAIN
Vauxhall's new Astra VXR will incorporate deliver a class-leading 400Nm of torque, giving it a 0-60mph time of 5.9 seconds and robust mid-range performance.

The VXR's turbocharged, 2.0-litre direct-injection engine harks from the Insignia family, but while its aluminium block is similar, the VXR has a unique aluminium cylinder head and new turbocharger to liberate 280PS (up 40PS on the previous model) and over 200Nm per litre of torque - the highest specific output in its class.

Developing a high-torque engine for the Vauxhall Astra VXR was the key to unlocking the car's real-world, mid-range performance, rather than focusing on power alone. And with maximum torque produced on a broad plateau between 2450rpm and 5000rpm, VXR drivers will never want for instant acceleration.

An all-new, state-of-the-art intake system was developed to feed as much air into the turbocharger as possible. The turbocharger itself was also improved to take more charge-air pressure, which builds from as early as 1400rpm for linear and strong acceleration. The maximum charge pressure is now 1.5 bar - 25 per cent more than in the Insignia 2.0T.

Vauxhall Astra VXR drivers can also look forward to a soundtrack that has been carefully engineered to appeal to enthusiasts, both from inside and outside the car. Drivers will get the full effect in the mid-to high rev range, especially when they change up from third to fourth under full throttle.

But outright performance hasn't come at the expense of efficiency and durability. Like all recent VXR models, the Astra was subjected to prolonged testing at the Nüburgring's notorious Nordschleife for 10,000 kilometres under race conditions - the equivalent to around 110,000 road miles.

And while the Astra VXR can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 5.9 seconds and hit a maximum 155mph, standard Start/Stop technology has reduced fuel consumption by 14 per cent (compared with the previous model) to a combined 34.9mpg, and reduced emissions to 189g/km.

All-new engine air intake system
Vauxhall engineers developed a completely new air intake system to improve air flow dynamics, reduce pressure loss and boost the engine performance even further.

The size of the intake air duct was significantly increased, as was the air cleaner's volume, reducing intake noise and allowing a greater quantity of air to be processed. This helped improve fuel consumption to a combined 34.9mpg, while reducing emissions to 189g/km - a 12 and 14 percent drop respectively compared with the previous Astra VXR.

Toughened and more durable turbocharger for quick throttle response
The engine's turbocharger is based on the twin-scroll principle. This means that in the exhaust manifold and turbocharger, the channels of the first and fourth cylinders are separated from those on the second and third cylinders. The pulsating exhaust gases are fed through spirals (scrolls) and brought together directly ahead of the turbine. By separating the flows, their dynamics are fully exploited.

The build-up of pressure starts as early as around 1400rpm. The maximum charge pressure has been increased to 1.5 bar - that represents a 25 per cent increase compared with the one used in the 2.0T Insignia. It was therefore necessary to make the turbocharger even tougher, more durable and able to withstand the increase in pressure.

Further important features to this compact turbocharger include the pneumatic over-run air valve and an efficiency-optimised turbine wheel. At a defined vacuum, a valve is opened which leads the air back to the compressor inlet. This keeps the speed of the charger at a high level. When the accelerator pedal is pressed again, charge pressure is then immediately available. To increase volumetric efficiency in the combustion chambers, the pre-compressed air is cooled by around 100 degrees Celsius in an intercooler before entering the chambers.

Optimised exhaust system for even better performance
Engineers also focused on reducing exhaust back pressure as a way of improving engine performance. Both the closed-couple converter (the catalyst near the engine) and the under-floor converter were tuned to reduce exhaust back pressure. Along with increasing the bore of the entire exhaust system, Vauxhall's engineers achieved a 25 per cent overall reduction in exhaust back pressure, versus the system used in the Insignia 2.0T.

In line with the mechanical changes made to the intake, exhaust and turbocharger, elements of the engine control unit (ECU) governing charge air pressure, fuel injection rate and ignition were all re-tuned.

Sound engineering
For drivers of cars like the Vauxhall Astra VXR, the soundtrack when you accelerate is almost as important as the time it takes to reach 100mph. So needless to say, engineering the right type of engine noise was an important part of the car's development.

Using a recent amendment to European noise regulations on pass-by noise - also known as the Lex Ferrari rule - engineers were able to liberate 75 decibels for the Astra VXR, a full decibel louder than the Astra GTC 1.6T. In order to pass the Lex Ferrari test, the Vauxhall Astra VXR had to accelerate from 50kph to 61kph in third gear on a stretch of road measuring just 15 metres - normally a challenge for all but the most powerful cars.

With an underlying robustness in its character, the engine noise recreates the jet-like noise of its predecessor under mid to high revs, when heard from inside the cabin. And thanks to the removal of one of the GTC's three silencers, there's even a distinctive burble at idle.

The twin bumper-integrated tailpipes have parallelogram-shaped openings and are unique in this class.

Nordschleife - the ultimate proving ground!
Before the modified Astra VXR engine could go into production, it was subjected to a series of challenging tests, one of which was to circulate the Nordschleife segment of the Nürburgring at race speeds for 10,000 kilometers, roughly equal to 180,000 road miles.

To achieve this level of durability, the Vauxhall Astra VXR's engine incorporates some novel features. Its high thermal endurance is supported by a water jacket which extends to the bottom of the cylinders, as well as oil-spray cooling for the underside of the pistons. Both camshafts in the engine respond automatically to an electro-hydraulic cam phaser, matching the valve opening times to the engine load status via the engine control unit. In addition, a higher overlap at lower speeds with continuously variable camshaft phasing ensures the turbocharger responds more quickly. The outlet valves are sodium-filled and all valves are actuated via low friction roller valve levers.

Other engine features are two counter-rotating balance shafts, low-maintenance chain drive for the camshafts and a cast-on oil filter housing, which is easily accessible from above. An oil change simply requires replacing the cartridge and is signaled by an interval indicator. Sensors measure wear and tear of the fully synthetic lubricant according to parameters such as the number of cold starts, as well as the overall number of starts.

MARKET & RIVALS
Volker Strycek, head of VXR product development and a former DTM driver and Nürburgring 24-hour winner, makes it clear about what his team wanted to achieve with the all-new Astra VXR. "Our goal was quite simple: to be the best in segment."

And with the UK's 'hot-hatch' market brimming with fresh and exciting products, the new Astra VXR had to raise the bar still further. Key to its success was the sophistication of its powertrain and chassis. With 280PS, the VXR produces more power than any of its current rivals, allowing it to accelerate from 0-60mph in a class-leading 5.9 seconds. But the killer punch is its 400Nm of maximum torque, giving it the highest specific output in its class.

The new VXR's chassis will be equally competitive, with a mechanical limited-slip differential (unique in class as a standard item), HiPerStrut front suspension, and bespoke brakes, springs and damper settings.

As with the previous Vauxhall Astra VXR and the current GTC, the UK will be the new model's biggest market. Around 10 per cent of all GTC volume will be VXR, equalling about 1200 units per year - the highest of any VXR model.

Key rivals will come from Volkswagen and Renault in the form of the Scirocco R and Megane Sport 265 (as well as the Focus ST, when it arrives in the UK). But the Astra VXR's keen pricing - £26,995 on the road - will undercut the Scirocco's by nearly £4,000, and that of the Megane 265 by more than £2000 when the Renault's equipped with its optional Cup Pack, including 19-inch alloys and a limited-slip differential (both standard on the Vauxhall).

Other standard equipment on the Vauxhall Astra VXR includes FlexRide adaptive damping, DAB, USB, Bluetooth and LED tail lights.

Vauxhall's unique Lifetime Warranty will also provide first owners of the VXR with the reassurance of comprehensive cover for however long they own the car.

The UK's hot-hatch class has become significantly hotter in the seven years since Vauxhall launched the first Astra VXR. Back then, the class norm for power was between 200PS and 250PS (the first Astra VXR produced 240PS), whereas now it starts at around 230PS right up to the new VXR's 280PS.

VXR customers can choose from a wide range of optional extras, including full leather upholstery and electrically adjustable seats, satnav with SD card and aux-in and Intelligent Adaptive Forward Lighting. One of the most popular options will be the VXR Aero Pack, which Vauxhall expects 85 per cent of customers to choose. For just £995, it includes 20-inch alloy wheels, a BiPlane Rear Spoiler and extended side skirts.

VXR - one of the fastest growing automotive sub-brands
The VXR brand has gone from strength to strength since the first car - a VXR220 Turbo - went down the line in 2004.

Buoyed by the success of Vauxhall's BTCC programme, the VXR badge was soon applied to a wide range of models, from the V8-powered Monaros to the Corsa, Vectra, Zafira and even the humble Meriva. The original Astra VXR joined them in 2005 and instantly became the best-seller in the VXR range.

More recently, the range has been rationalised and now extends to just four models: the Corsa VXR/VXR Nürburgring, new Vauxhall Astra VXR, Insignia VXR and VXR8 family, including the VXR8 GTS, Maloo and Sports Tourer.

The new Toyota Auris Touring Sports adds a popular wagon body style to the model range's comprehensive choice of powertrains. It is the first wagon in the segment available with a full hybrid powertrain, representing a further diversification of Toyota's application of its Hybrid Synergy Drive technology.

The new Toyota Auris Touring Sports combines dynamic design with segment-best functionality and superior loadspace. With battery located beneath the rear seats, the installation of the HSD powertrain offers no compromise to either loadspace or luggage capacity.

Wagon variants currently represent 25% of the C-segment sales mix, with 76% of those sales attributed to the fleet market. The new Auris Touring Sports will further broaden the appeal of the Auris range, helping to increase the model's segment share to over 5.0% by 2014, its first full year of European sales.

Design and Packaging
Sharing its 2,600 mm wheelbase and 10.4 metre turning circle, the Toyota Auris Touring Sports is 285 mm longer than the hatchback, all of which is dedicated to the extended loadspace.

Rear seats in place, the loadspace is 1115 mm long and 1452 mm wide with a superior capacity of 530 litres. With the rear seats folded flat, loadspace length increases to a maximum length of 2047 mm, a maximum height of up to 890 mm and a class-leading total capacity of 1658 litres.

This superior luggage capacity is matched by segment-best functionality. The Toyota Auris Touring Sports is the only C-segment wagon to offer customers the combined benefits of Toyota's Easy Flat, one-touch foldable rear seats, a double level loadspace floor, a two-way tonneau cover, a roller-type luggage net, shopping bag hooks, aluminium roof rails and a 12 V outlet in the luggage compartment.

As with the new hatchback, the Toyota Auris Touring Sports' bold, dynamic exterior design maximises the aerodynamic benefits of the model's reduction in overall height, and the dynamic improvements offered by its lower centre of gravity.

The new Auris Touring Sports shares the hatchback's new frontal design, which combines Toyota's Under Priority design language with Keen Look detailing to give a powerful yet elegant road presence.

In profile, the Toyota Auris Touring Sports also shares the hatchback's steeply raked windscreen, which flows into an extended roofline featuring aluminium roof rails and an integral rear spoiler. At 1553 mm long by 960 mm wide, the optional Skyview panoramic sunroof is one of the largest in the segment and further strengthens the impression of roominess created by the all-new interior.

The extended, three-panel side glazing features blacked-out pillars, including a piano black finish to the B pillar, and is underscored by chrome-accented trim above the bodywork's powerful, rising beltline crease.

To the rear, the Toyota Auris Touring Sports features a new bumper and tailgate design, with the loadspace sill set 100 mm lower than that of the hatchback, above a chrome floating rear spoiler. As with the rest of the Auris range, a new, wraparound rear combination lamp design reinforces the shape of the rear wing, new D pillar design and rear screen.

Driving Performance
Reinforcing Toyota's commitment to improving the dynamic abilities of its vehicles to offer customers a more engaging driving experience, the Auris Touring Sports benefits from all the improvements made to the new Auris hatchback.

If features an increase in bodyshell rigidity, a lower centre of gravity, enhancements to suspension and steering, a better driving position and improved NVH characteristics to offer drivers a more comfortable and engaging driving experience.

The Toyota Auris Touring Sports available with the same engine range as the Auris hatchback; a choice of 1.33 litre Dual VVT-i and 1.6 litre Valvematic petrol engines, improved 1.4 litre and 2.0 litre D-4D diesel engines, and the first full hybrid powertrain in the C-segment wagon market.

Capable of operating both independently and in combination, the HSD system's 1.8 litre VVT-i petrol engine and electric motor generate a maximum power output of 136 DIN hp (100 kW), equipping the Auris Hybrid Touring Sports with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 10.9 seconds and a maximum speed of 180 km/h.

Conversely, the Toyota Auris Touring Sports full hybrid returns class-leading CO2 emissions of only 86 g/km, and significantly lower NOx and NO particulate emissions than diesel engined cars of comparable performance.

In conjunction with Toyota's Stop & Start technology and an advanced Multidrive S transmission, CO2 emissions are highly competitive across the entire Auris Touring Sports engine range. The 1.33 and 1.6 litre petrol engines generate 127 and 139 g/km respectively, the 2.0 litre diesel 115 g/km, and the 1.4 litre diesel just 109 g/km.

Suzuki announced some styling refreshments to its highly popular Suzuki Jimny compact 4x4 model in the UK. The 2013 model receives a number of exterior and interior design updates to help modernise appearance whilst maintaining the long established tough and capable reputation Suzuki Jimny has amongst its 20,000 loyal owners in the UK.

Design revisions include a new front bumper and grille design, new design bonnet shape incorporating central air intake as well as repositioning of the front fog lamps. The new front bumper design has resulted in a slight increase in overall length of 30mm to 3,675mm - although Suzuki Jimny easily remains the most compact SUV on sale in the UK.

For the interior, a new seat fabric trim has been adopted for the SZ3; both SZ3 and SZ4 models have new design front and rear headrests as well as ISOFIX child seat mountings fitted as standard to the rear seats.

Breeze Blue has now been added to the optional metallic paint range of four colours available for the higher specification SZ4 model with three metallic and one solid colour available for SZ3. Metallic paint is a £399 option.

Suzuki Jimny has a neat and practical look and since sales began in 1998, it has accumulated a loyal following of repeat customers who enjoy a quirky alternative to a supermini or crossover SUV. The Suzuki Jimny exceeds expectations off road whilst still being more than capable in any urban area, ideal for customers who want the best of both worlds.

The all-alloy 16-valve 1.3-litre engine benefits from variable valve timing, ensuring lively performance, and strong fuel economy. Maximum output is 85PS, with 81lbft of torque delivered at 4,100 rpm; a flat torque curve means near maximum torque is delivered from as low as 2,500 rpm, giving Suzuki Jimny the kind of flexible driving character and pulling power that are integral to a successful SUV.

There are clear benefits in terms of fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions: with the manual transmission model returning an official 39.8mpg in combined cycle driving (38.7mpg for the automatic); respective CO2 outputs are 162 and 167g/km.

The 2013 Legacy is powered by either a 3.6-liter H6 or a new, more efficient 2.5-liter 4-cylinder powertrain and debuts revised styling as well as the new EyeSight driver-assist system. Chassis enhancements improve both ride quality and agility in the 2013 Legacy, which also offers new amenities and audio capabilities.

The 2013 Subaru Legacy features new, sportier front styling with new headlights, grille and front bumper. The changes  further enhance the appeal of the Subaru Legacy, which has sold in record numbers since its 2010 redesign. With standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, the 2013 Subaru Legacy remains the most fuel-efficient midsize all-wheel drive sedan in America. At the same time, the Legacy rewards drivers with engaging performance and a high level of driving comfort and offers outstanding safety performance. For added safety, the 2013 Legacy adds a new Brake Override system.

The 2013 Subaru Legacy remains a standout in the midsize field in terms of roominess. At 103 cu. ft., the Legacy offers more total passenger room than some of its competitors, and rear seat legroom measures a generous 37.8 inches. The 14.7 cu. ft. trunk is on par with front-wheel drive competitors, a significant achievement considering that the Symmetrical AWD system requires packaging for a rear differential and drive axles.

The Most Fuel-Efficient All-Wheel Drive Midsize Sedan with up to 32 MPG
The 2013 Legacy 2.5i models debut a new double-overhead-cam (DOHC) FB series 2.5-liter Boxer engine for increased performance and fuel efficiency. The new engine produces 173 hp and 174 lb.-ft. of torque, compared to 170 hp and 170 lb.-ft. from the previous 2.5-liter SOHC engine. More significant is that the new engine produces greater low-end torque across a broad speed range, making the 2013 Legacy 2.5i models more responsive in everyday driving.

The 2013 Legacy 2.5i offers a choice between a standard 6-speed manual transmission and the second-generation Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission); the latter is standard on the 2.5i Premium and Limited. The second-generation Lineartronic CVT offers more responsive and quieter operation compared to the transmission it replaces.

The 2013 Subaru Legacy 3.6R continues with a 256-horsepower 3.6-liter 6-cylinder Boxer engine and 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. A downshift "blipping" feature adds a sporty feel when using the Legacy 3.6R steering wheel paddle shifters.

Although official EPA fuel economy figures are not yet available, Subaru projects that the 2013 Legacy 2.5i with the Lineartronic CVT will achieve 24 mpg city/32 mpg highway/27 mpg combined, compared to 23/31/26 for the 2012 model. That makes the 2013 Legacy 2.5i competitive with many midsize sedans that come only with front-wheel drive.

Unlike a conventional automatic transmission that uses fixed gear ratios, a CVT provides infinite variability between the lowest and highest available ratios with no discernable steps or shifts. The CVT continuously and smoothly adapts to performance demand, helping to keep the engine in its most efficient operating range. Models with the CVT also feature a 6-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters, which allow the driver to control the transmission via six pre-set ratios.

New EyeSight Driver-Assist System
The 2013 Subaru Legacy (and Outback) models debut Subaru's new EyeSight driver-assist system, which integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning. Projected to be one of the most affordable such technologies available in the U.S. market, EyeSight uses a stereo camera design developed by Subaru to provide a detection angle wider than that of radar-based systems.

The EyeSight system processes stereo images to identify the vehicles traveling in front, as well as obstacles, traffic lanes and other items. Below a speed differential of approximately 19 mph, EyeSight is capable of detecting pedestrians or objects in the vehicle's path and can activate in order to mitigate or even avoid the collision. Under certain circumstances, Eyesight is able to bring the car to a complete stop.

At relative speeds above approximately 19 mph, EyeSight can apply the brakes when an object is detected, and will attempt to brake if the driver takes no evasive action, or does not brake appropriately, to help mitigate collision damage.

The Lane Departure and Sway Warning feature can detect if the car begins to wander outside the intended lane without a turn signal being used, or if the car begins to sway within the travel lane. Intended for freeway use, Eyesight's Adaptive Cruise Control system can maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, braking and/or accelerating the car as needed to maintain the driver-selected target speed and traveling distance. Adaptive Cruise Control is operational from 1-87 mph and can fully brake the vehicle to a stop if the system "locks on" to a vehicle ahead. As an added convenience, Adaptive Cruise Control assists the driver in heavy "stop and go" freeway traffic by maintaining distance from the vehicle ahead.

In heavy traffic conditions, EyeSight will also alert the driver when the vehicle ahead has moved if he or she doesn't react within several seconds. The technology can also help reduce collision damages by cutting the throttle when it senses an obstacle in front, but the accelerator pedal continues to be pushed.

Retuned Suspension Enhances Agility and Ride Quality
Numerous enhancements to the body structure, suspension and steering give the Legacy a smoother and quieter ride for 2013, while also delivering improved handling agility. Greater stiffness at key points of the structure, including the front strut mounts and rear frame rails, helps reduce the transmission of vibration while also contributing to more responsive handling.

In tandem with the structural enhancements, Subaru has increased the diameter of the double-wishbone rear suspension's sway bar and also increased the spring and damper rates and bushing stiffness. As a result, body roll has been reduced by up to 40 percent. The Legacy driver will experience a more responsive, yet quieter vehicle overall.

Increased Interior Comfort and Convenience
New seat fabric enhances comfort in the 2013 Legacy, while dark, glossy wood grain trim provides a luxurious appearance on Limited models. Limited trim level models for 2013 feature a new rear-seat A/C outlet.

With the Keyless Access & Start system, the driver can unlock the car by touching the door handle while carrying the remote control in a pocket or purse. (The trunk also has an unlock touch sensor.) A start/stop switch operates the ignition. A new electro-luminescent instrument cluster in the Limited models integrates a 3.5-inch color screen for the multi-information display, which also shows EyeSight functions when the car is so equipped.

Three Trim Levels
The 2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i is available in three trim levels - base, Premium and Limited. The Legacy 3.6R is available in base and Limited. The base 2.5i features a long roster of standard features, among them Bluetooth® hands-free phone and streaming audio, a USB charging port, steering wheel cruise control and audio switches; a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, electronic parking brake with Hill Holder System and an automatic headlight function. The electronic Hill Holder System holds the vehicle in place until the driver applies the throttle to pull away from a stop.

Legacy Premium models add the Lineartronic CVT plus additional amenities, including a 10-way power driver's seat (with power lumbar support adjustment) and driver's auto up/down window; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter; instrument panel storage bin with door; ambient light for the overhead console, body-colored side mirrors and 17-in. alloy wheels (all 3.6R trim lines have 17-in. alloy wheels as standard).

The 2013 Subaru Legacy Premium models offer three option packages: (1) The All-Weather Package adds heated front seats and mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer; (2) power moonroof, and (3) The harman/kardon® display-type premium audio system with standard XM® Satellite Radio service (now with a 4-month free trial subscription included), a 4.3-in. color display, and 440-watt high-performance audio amplifier and 9 harman/kardon premium speakers, with subwoofer.

The Limited models feature perforated leather upholstery, dual zone automatic climate control, the display-type harman/kardon premium audio package, rear A/C duct, electro-luminescent gauges, and a 4-way power front passenger seat. The Limited models also exclusively offer an available voice-activated GPS navigation system with a rear vision camera and XM® NavTraffic (now with a 4-month free trial subscription included), among other features. Updated Audio Technology
The standard audio system in the Legacy 2.5i model is upgraded for 2013. New features include Bluetooth hands-free phone capability and audio streaming, iPod® control capability and a USB port. The system continues with an AM/FM stereo, single disc CD player, Radio Data Broadcast System (RDBS), 3.5mm aux. input jack and 4 speakers. The Premium trim level adds a pair of dash-mounted tweeters.

The top-level Legacy Limited models exclusively offer an optional new navigation system that includes all of the features in the harman/kardon audio package plus: touch-screen GPS navigation system with 7.0-inch LCD display; voice activated controls and navigation; XM NavTraffic (subscription required); rear vision camera, and an SD card slot for convenient navigation map updates.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive: Three Different Types
Subaru offers three different Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive systems in the 2013 Legacy line, each tailored to the type of transmission. In Subaru Legacy 2.5i models equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, the Continuous AWD system uses a viscous-coupling locking center differential to distribute power a nominal 50/50 front to rear. Slippage at either the front or rear wheels will cause the system to send more power to the opposite wheels. Legacy 2.5i models equipped with the Lineartronic CVT use Active Torque Split AWD. An electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch actively controls power distribution in response to driving conditions and wheel slippage.

The 2013 Legacy 3.6R exclusively features the Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) AWD system with a 5-speed electronic automatic transmission. A planetary center differential works with an electronically controlled continuously variable hydraulic transfer clutch to manage power distribution. The VTD system normally sends more power to the rear wheels (45:55) to enhance handling agility, and it can continuously adjust power distribution in response to driving and road conditions.

Subaru Safety
The Subaru Ring-Shaped Frame Reinforcement body structure has been proven for occupant protection in more than a decade of use. Inside, the Subaru Legacy features standard front side pelvis/torso airbags and side curtain airbags that offer front and rear outboard seat coverage.

Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) combines stability and traction control functions, and traction control works to augment the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive functionality. The 4-wheel disc Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) integrates Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and the Brake Assist safety system that automatically applies maximum braking pressure in an emergency stop.

The electronic Hill Holder System holds the vehicle in place until the driver presses the accelerator pedal to pull away from a stop. New for 2013, a Brake Override system ensures that engine power will be cut when both the brake and accelerator are pressed simultaneously.

Subaru produces a full line of all-wheel drive sedans, crossovers and SUVs, and for 2013 has also introduced the rear-wheel drive BRZ sports car to its portfolio.

Power

Style
The fresh exterior design has been styled to reflect SsangYong's modern and efficient new look. From the front, it communicates a dynamic yet sophisticated appearance, featuring a mesh grille, trapezoidal bumper and stylish black headlight bezels to provide a premium touch. In profile, the sharp belt line runs to the rear bumper emphasising a sleek, sporty stance, while from the rear the wide glass area affords excellent rearward visibility.

The new Škoda Octavia sets standards in the compact segment. The Octavia's third generation more than ever confirms the car's unique position in its vehicle segment, impressing with an unrivalled space offering, new design, high functionality, innovative safety and comfort systems, low fuel consumption, wide range of "Simply Clever" solutions and a Škodatypical price-value ratio.

The Škoda Octavia in its overall package has always been about offering that little bit extra. This is down to the generous space offering, but also the fusion of an elegant saloon shape with the practical advantages of car with a large hatch, a fusion that is unique in this segment. The new generation confirms this uniqueness. "The new Octavia shows us resolutely continuing down a Škoda-typical road. It is a car with middle-class qualities at a compact-car price. It is an ideal car for demanding, confident customers expecting a modern Octavia with all its good values. It is our best," says Frank Welsch, Škoda board member for technical development.

Unrivalled space offering, optimum functionality
The new Škoda Octavia sets benchmarks in its class in terms of its space offering. "The new Octavia offers space such as is otherwise found only in higher classes," says Welsch. No other car in the compact segment offers more interior length (1,782 mm), more knee room (73 mm) and more headroom at the back (980 mm). Also best in class is the boot volume at 590 litres. Other interior dimensions have also increased significantly compared to the Octavia's second generation: front head room: + 8 mm, front elbow width: + 39 mm, rear elbow width: + 26 mm.

New refinement: a distinctive, clear and timeless design
The new Škoda Octavia is not just roomy and functional, it looks good, too. Škoda design chief Jozef Kaban and his team revised the car from head to toe, creating enthusiasm at first sight. Never before has a Škoda Octavia appeared as dynamic and at the same time as timelessly elegant, as distinctive, refined and assured on the road as this bestseller's third generation. "Each line and gap breathes love of precision and detail. The new Octavia is an unmistakable face in the automobile crowd," says Welsch.

Compared to its predecessor, the Octavia has grown significantly in length and width. The new model is 90 mm longer and 45 mm wider than the second-generation Škoda Octavia. At the same time, the wheelbase has grown by 108 mm, mainly benefiting the interior and space on the rear seats.

The front of the car is assured and confident thanks to an emphasis on horizontal lines and a new location for the Škoda logo. The side aspect of the new Škoda Octavia has become markedly more dynamic when compared to its predecessor. This is down to the long wheelbase as well as to the shortened front overhang and a C pillar pulled far backwards. The high, sharp tornado line provides the car with optical stretch and distinctively highlights its coupé-like silhouette. A special new characteristic is an upswept dynamic window line in the rear doors, the so-called "fin" - a small, but effective design idea providing the car with a forceful appearance and direction.

Its rear aspect is also about precision, classiness and perfect proportions. Everything is in the right place, well-positioned and tidy. Škoda's typical lighting graphic with its distinctive C-shaped lighting contour is executed in uncompromising brilliance. Tidiness, elegance and especially lots of space are what the new Octavia's interior is about. Škoda designers have completely redone the car's insides.

Safety at the highest level
In developing the new Škoda Octavia, an important goal was to make the car even safer. Accordingly, Škoda engineers developed a host of cutting-edge safety systems for the new Octavia including Front Assistant/emergency braking function (from May 2013), Lane Assistant, which keeps the Octavia on track, multicollisionbraking/ automatic brake actuation in an accident, Crew Protect Assistant/securing of the vehicle in an accident situation or Driver Activity Assistant (fatigue detection). These systems help avoid accidents or mitigate their consequences for occupants and other road users.

In addition, a precise chassis, a long wheelbase and a rigid and light body structure combine to ensure an extremely stable handling in Škoda's most recent offspring. In the event of an accident, a comprehensive package of passive safety elements provides optimum protection for driver and occupants. In the area of passive safety, up to nine airbags, finely interacting with 3-point safety belts, shield occupants from injury. Knee airbags (standard in EU countries) and rear side airbags are available for the first time in a Škoda Octavia.

New efficiency: CO2 emissions from 89 g/km
Engineers achieved significant improvements in the Škoda Octavia's consumption and emission figures thanks to newly developed petrol and diesel engines, a low drag coefficient and reduced vehicle weight.

The GreenLine version of the new Škoda Octavia (1.6 TDI/81 kW) achieves CO2 emissions of only 89 g/km and consumes a mere 3.4 litres of diesel per 100 km. In all, four petrol engines, all with cutting-edge TSI technology, and four modern TDI common-rail diesel engines are available, with a natural-gas version planned for later. Except for the relevant entry-level petrol and diesel option, all engines now are available in a Green tec version with a start-stop system and recuperation. The line-up runs all the way to the top option, the 1.8 TSI with 132 kW. Modern manual and automatic DSG transmissions are available, with all-wheel-drive versions in the works. A sporty-trim Škoda Octavia RS is also in the pipeline.

Despite its increased size and larger amount of technology on board, Škoda engineers have still succeeded in making the car up to 102 kilogrammes lighter than the Škoda Octavia's second generation. This was achieved thanks to resolute lightweight engineering, a progressive body design, utilisation of high- and ultra-tensile steel and a careful selection of materials. Actual weight reduction will vary depending on buildability of each vehicle configuration.

Supreme comfort through innovative technology
In addition, the new Škoda Octavia offers numerous new comfort functions such as hitherto available only in higher-segment vehicles. In addition to making their debut in the new Octavia, some of them are even becoming available for the first time ever in a Škoda. In this context, use of new technologies is no end in itself, but seeks to provide tangible added value to customers, meaning no fanciful knickknacks, but technology for people's sake, technology that makes mobility safer and more comfortable for people.

Available for the first time in a Škoda is the Adaptive Cruise Assistant, which automatically maintains a pre-set distance to the car ahead. The new Intelligent Light Assistant will switch to high beam and back automatically, increasing comfort and safety in traffic. The Automatic Parking Assistant makes parking the Octavia in and out easier. Also available for the first time in a Škoda will be in the future traffic-sign recognition as part of the 'Traveller Assistant' package. Driving Mode Selection enables drivers to set certain vehicle driving characteristics at the push of the button. Another first is the electric panoramic sliding/tilting sunroof: a transparent panorama roof enhancing comfort and wellbeing on board the Octavia. The new Octavia is also available with KESSY (Keyless-Entry-Start-and-Exit-System), the automatic door- and ignition-lock system.

New generation of infotainment systems
The new Škoda Octavia impresses with an all-new generation of radio and radio navigation systems. Touch displays with proximity sensors and swiping functionality will be available in higher-level systems, while the new CANTON sound system and an acoustically optimised passenger space provide pure listening pleasure.

Practical and functional thanks to ‚Simply Clever' solutions
As in every Škoda, life for occupants is made easier by a range of ‚Simply Clever' features in the new Octavia. Depending on trim level, the following items are available either as standard or as an option. They include foldable cargo elements for the boot, enabling safe anchoring of objects on the floor. A double-sided floor covering in the boot can be found for the first time in a Škoda Octavia. An ice scraper is placed inside the filler flap. A warning vest holder is located underneath the driver's seat and a rubbish bin inside the door panel. A multimedia holder has space for an iPod, a mobile phone and the like. A large overhead sunglasses compartment is just one of many storage bays, holders und hooks that make for an intelligent and clean organisation of interior and baggage space of the new Škoda Octavia. Also on board are the fuel-error prevention function and a boot cover folding away behind the rear seats.

The new Škoda Octavia: Safety on the highest level
A central objective in the development of the new Škoda Octavia was to make the vehicle even safer. The new model features a whole range of innovative systems that previously were the preserve of the mid-range and luxury class: from the Front Assistant to the proactive occupant protection Crew Protect Assistant. In case of a collision, a comprehensive package of passive safety elements is ensuring the best possible protection of both the driver and the passengers. The newly developed, precise chassis, the long wheelbase and the solid and light-weight body structure contribute to outstandingly stable handling of the most recent Škoda model.

Innovative assistance systems for even more safety
The portfolio of safety assistance systems for the new Škoda Octavia is extremely diverse. All systems have in common that they do not patronise the driver, but leave him in charge of driving the vehicle. However, they do make safe driving easier for him or her in many day-to-day and also in less common traffic situations.

After a collision in traffic, there is quite often the risk of a further collision, meaning a second impact: be it with the vehicle ahead, another road user, or with obstacles (crash barriers, trees). The Multi-Collision Brake, available for the first time in a Škoda, works to prevent this. In EU countries, Škoda fits this technology as standard. The Multi-Collision Brake automatically slows the vehicle after a detected collision - even if the driver no longer presses the brake pedal. A further collision is avoided and/or the speed at which the further collision takes place is reduced. The Multi-Collision Brake is a component of the Electronic Stability Control ESC. It slows down the car up to a residual speed of 10 km/h. Activation of the Multi-Collision Brake switches on the hazard flashers and the brake lights. The driver can override the system at any time by pressing the accelerator or initiating an emergency stop of his own volition. German automotive club ADAC recently presented the Volkswagen-developed Multi-Collision Brake with a safety innovation award.

Another debut in a Škoda is that of the Front Assistant in the new Octavia. The Front Assistant becomes active in case of an imminent head-to-tail collision. Just as with the Adaptive Cruise Assistant comfort feature that is also available in the Škoda Octavia, the Front Assistant uses a radar sensor integrated into the front end to continuously measure the distance to the vehicle ahead. The system works in four stages: The smaller the distance to the vehicle ahead becomes, the stronger the Front Assistant acts. The first stage is a visual warning alerting to insufficient distance. The next stage warns both visually and acoustically of an approaching obstacle and prepares the braking system. As a main warning, the third stage triggers a brief jerking of the brakes and then initiates the automatic partial braking. The highest stage finally turns the braking assistant to the highest sensitivity for automatic application of the brakes. If the driver does not react at all, an emergency braking takes place. This way, the system can reduce the severity of the accident and may, depending on the situation, even prevent a collision entirely.

In a speed range of 5 to 30 km/h, the Front Assistant works in conjunction with the City Emergency Braking Function to bring the Octavia to a full stop automatically if the driver does not react to an obstacle in the vehicle's path. The City Emergency Braking Function achieves a deceleration of 8 m/s2 in case of maximum risk of collision.

Driver fatigue is one of the most frequent causes of accidents. The Driver Activity Assistant (fatigue detection), available for the first time in the new Škoda Octavia, can reduce this problem. Based on observed steering behaviour, the system recognises deviations from normal handling and hence a weakening of the driver's concentration. The system analyses the steering behaviour 15 minutes after the engine has been started provided speed is more than 65 km/h, and stores the result as basis for a signal. A significant deviation from the characteristic steering behaviour will indicate fatigue of the driver triggering a visual message in the cluster instrument - "fatigue detected - please take break" - recommending a pause.

In the Crew Protect Assistant pro-active occupant protection, Škoda makes another system available in the new Škoda Octavia that was hitherto mainly used in luxury vehicles. The Crew Protect Assistant 'prepares' the driver and the passengers for an impending accident: In case of a detected risk - for instance, emergency braking or a driving situation rated critical - the system pre-tightens the seat belts for both the driver and the passengers. In addition, the system closes the side windows (except for a remaining gap) and the sunroof in case of critical instable driving situations such as in strong oversteering or understeering with triggering of the ESC. This is done to prevent objects from entering the car.

The Lane Assistant, a premiere at Škoda, also considerably improves driving safety. The lane departure warning assistant lowers the risk of inadvertently leaving the lane. It supports drivers of the new Octavia especially on motorways and highways with clearly visible lane markings. The system works with a camera integrated into the base of the interior rear-view mirror in the windshield. The camera detects lane markings in front of the car at speeds of 65 km/h and above. The lane departure warning assistant recognises an unintended departure from the lane, providing a visual message in the cluster instrument, and initiates corrective steering. Without recognisable lane markings, the system does not work. If the turning signal is turned on prior to crossing a marking, the Lane Assistant also does not react.

Comprehensive protection in a collision
Unfortunately, not even the best safety systems can prevent each and every accident. If, despite all precautions, a collision or impact occurs, the new Škoda Octavia provides driver and passengers with the best possible protection available. For the first time, the Octavia features a knee airbag for the driver (standard in EU countries) as well as rear side airbags. Up to nine airbags protect the occupants from injuries in a finely adjusted interaction with the 3-point seatbelts, providing comprehensive protection from injury. In addition, the front-seat passenger airbag can be deactivated when transporting an infant carrier.

As a rule, all occupants are secured with 3-point seat belts (height-adjustable in the front) with pre-tensioners (in the rear, optional in combination with side airbags). Integrated belt force limiters reduce forces to an occupant's chest. For increased child safety, Isofix child seats can be firmly connected to the car using apposite mounts on the backseat and also with an additional top safety belt, the so-called TopTether. Upon request, Isofix anchors can also be integrated into the front-seat passenger seat.

In all countries of the European Union, safety features such as the anti-skid program Electronic Stability Control (ESC) including the Multi-Collision Brake, seven airbags, the deactivatable front-seat passenger airbag, and Daytime Running Lights come as standard. ESC is triggered in critical driving situations and systematically prevents the vehicle from swerving in curves.

Improved axles, longer wheel base make for a modern chassis
Stable handling with high agility in curves and balanced suspension comfort were the objectives of the Škoda Octavia's chassis developers. The result is remarkable: a stable, balanced chassis that optimally fulfils all safety and comfort requirements.

The chassis of the new Octavia uses one of two types of rear axle. Petrol engine versions with up to 103 kW und diesel engines up to 110 kW come with a newly designed twist beam rear axle. More powerful engines as well as future all-wheel-drive (Combi) and natural gas CNG drive versions will use a newly developed multi-link rear axle.

The torsion beam rear axle consists of a cross-section open at the bottom in which an inlay sheet is welded in at the end, each. The inlay sheets are of different lengths so that different torsion rates can be achieved. In comparison to a welded-in tubular stabiliser, this design leads to a significant weight advantage. The twist beam rear axle weighs 38 kg, that is 15 kg less than the rear axle previously used in the Octavia - with increased rigidity and improved roll-steer behaviour.

The multilink rear axle was also systematically improved, especially with an eye on the weight. Use of high-strength steel as well as structural improvements in a large number of components reduced weight by 4 kg to a current 49 kg. The underlying design principle with its systematic separation of longitudinal and transverse rigidity assures excellent comfort and handling characteristics.

At the front, the new Octavia features a MacPherson front axle (struts) with a newly developed wishbone at the bottom. High-strength steel for the wishbone and an innovative bionics design approach at the rocker pivot contribute to both weight savings and stability. The auxiliary frame mounted centrally on the front axle is designed for the highest transverse rigidity. Overall, 2.8 kg of weight have been saved in the front axle.

The wheel base of the new Škoda Octavia has grown by 108 mm in comparison to its predecessor. This is the longest wheel base in the segment. This significantly larger distance between the front axle and the rear axle additionally has a positive effect on the vehicle's road handling stability.

Safe and lighter-weight body due to innovative manufacturing methods
Thanks to innovative use of high-strength and highest-strength steels as well as new manufacturing methods have resulted in a body for the new Škoda Octavia that is not only lighter but also sturdier than that of its predecessor model. Approximately a quarter (26.1 per cent) of the safety architecture consists of hot formed, highest-strength steels. These components are up to six times stronger than common deep-drawing steels and are up to four times as strong as conventional high-strength steels. They are created by heating steel at high temperatures (approx. 950 degrees Celsius), forming it while it is still glowing, and then cooling it down to 180 degrees Celsius within 5.5 seconds. The advantage is that components thus manufactured be made considerably thinner than before for the same crash resistance - this saves weight and leads to fuel savings in the new Škoda Octavia.

Efficient and powerful: the engines for the new Škoda Octavia
The third generation of the Škoda Octavia uses a newly developed generation of modern petrol and diesel engines. Compared with their predecessors, fuel consumption and emission values of the engines are lower by up to 23 per cent. All in all, there will be eight engine versions available: four TSI petrol engines and four TDI common-rail diesel engines.

The range of available engines for the new Škoda Octavia includes eight units, from the 1.2 TSI/63 kW to the top performance engine, the 1.8 TSI with an output of 132 kW. An economical GreenLine version is on offer too. A natural gas version as well as a sporty Octavia RS are in the pipeline. The GreenLine sustainable version of the new Octavia, a 1.6 TDI with a power output of 81 kW, has a CO2 emission value of only 89 g/km and uses less than 3.4 litres diesel for 100 km. In EU countries, all engines - except for the basic engines - come standard with a start/stop system and brake energy recovery via the starter generator (Green tec/GreenLine models). When Rolls-Royce Motor Cars came to update its Phantom family of models, the words of company co-founder Sir Henry Royce informed everything that designers, engineers and craftspeople set out to achieve: Take the best that exists and make it better.

This historic cri de coeur came to represent the significant improvements made to the marque's pinnacle cars when launched in 2012, and continues to resontate strongly from the design studios to the assembly hall at the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood today.

But that was only part of Royce's famous quote. Take the best that exists and make it better: when it does not exist design it.

These words informed the development of Rolls-Royce Wraith: nothing like it existed in the Rolls-Royce portfolio, nor the wider automotive world.

The expression of when it does not exist, design it is steeped in Rolls-Royce heritage. It can be seen in the pioneering spirit and vehicles that defined the company in the early 20th century. Adventures that took place on land, sea and in the air, that once led Rolls-Royce to three consecutive world speed records.

And of course there was the company's founding forefather, the Honourable Charles Rolls, a man whose appetite for adventure drove him to success in motor racing, ballooning and aviation. He became the first man in history to cross the English Channel and return without stopping in a powered aircraft, an achievement that earned him the highest praise of King George V.

Rolls-Royce Wraith echoes the spirit of these historic endeavours, pushing the boundaries of design and engineering, challenging perceptions and delivering the most dynamic, involving driving experience in the marque's 109 year history. It didn't exist, so Rolls-Royce designed it.

Power, style, drama
In its design, Rolls-Royce Wraith presents a masterpiece of elegant simplicity, exuding poise and the promise of dynamism. There is a sense that this car is ready to move with purpose on its driver's command.

Grace and beauty define the exterior presentation. The swept lines of the fastback, a style whose origins can be found in 1930s automotive design, most clearly signal its purposeful character, one which hints gently at the noir.

Performance complements the drama of exterior styling. A shorter wheelbase, wider rear track, 624 bhp / 465kW derived from the twin turbo V12 and a 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds (0-62, 4.6 seconds) give expression to the car's dynamic looks.

But Wraith is no GT bruiser; it is every inch a refined and luxurious Rolls-Royce, a car where the sense of arrival and joy of the journey are as important as the canvas upon which it is drawn.

Effortless performance, luxurious interior
Wraith debuts the most intelligent drive train ever to feature in a Rolls-Royce, including the application of ground-breaking technologies like Satellite Aided Transmission (SAT). This processes GPS data to predict the driver's next move and automatically select the right gear for the road ahead. Unnecessary gear changes are thus avoided, augmenting the famous Rolls-Royce trait of waftability and ensuring Wraith is constantly poised to deliver on its dynamic promise. Following a sweeping bend, for example, the optimum gear is always pre-selected for effortless acceleration.

Complementing Satellite Aided Transmission, Rolls-Royce Wraith's further dynamic enhancements include a more direct steering response to aid precision in corners, as well as more dynamic spring and damper settings.

Step inside Wraith's coach doors and there is the feeling of going aboard a luxury yacht. It is a serene space for four occupants, who will be cocooned in a striking and contemporary interior furnished in beautiful materials, surrounded by tactile Phantom-grade leathers.

Design details like the expansive Canadel Panelling and blood orange needle tips for speedometer and power reserve gauge hint further at agility, speed and performance. Look upwards however, and Rolls-Royce presents something more traditional - at least for the 21st century. Starlight headliner - offered for the first time beyond the Phantom range - features thousands of tiny fibre optic lamps hand-woven by craftspeople into the roof lining.

It remains one of the company's most endearing and popular features.

The Honourable Charles Rolls
Wraith is a model that draws parallels with the story of founding forefather Honourable Charles Rolls. For like the pioneering Rolls, this car pushes boundaries, taking Rolls-Royce further than it has gone before, challenging then delivering on the promise of pace and adventure.

In a similar vein, this car also embraces the very finest things in life, the elegance and refinement enjoyed by a new generation of confident gentlemen and women. It will establish a reputation as the ultimate gentleman's gran turismo - the car Charles Rolls would have chosen to drive from Paris to Madrid were he alive today. Or from New York to Washington. Or from Shanghai to Beijing. Or from...

DESIGN
Like a world-class athlete poised at the starting blocks, Wraith presents a picture of anticipation and quickens the pulse when viewed for the first time. Without overstatement there is drama and an immediate sense of refined power expressed by its bold fastback design. Wraith exudes effortless style and beauty... derived through elegant simplicity. A high waistline combined with low roof line and raked cabin accelerate the eye rearwards, while tension in its surfaces suggests a car set to move - quickly if necessary.

Unique in character
In terms of sheer presence Wraith is clearly cut from the same luxurious cloth as today's Phantom and Ghost models. Yet it displays cues that can be traced through past generations; effortless poise with accentuated rear overhang, elegant coach doors and, of course, the Spirit of Ecstasy adorning the grille.

But this is a very different model to those of the last century - and stands alone among Rolls-Royce models today. A wider rear track, longer bonnet, raked glass house and deeply recessed pantheon grille, unite in presenting a truly focused car, a Rolls-Royce with its own unique character.

The consummate gentleman's gran turismo, Wraith stands as a contemporary homage to the era of effortless spacious coupés and grand tourers. A time where pioneers and adventurers became legends and their masterful machines objects of desire.

The expression of power
The traditional pantheon grille design has further evolved with Wraith. The cue here is that of a more functionally derived air intake, not unlike that of a jet turbine, giving greater expression to the car's dynamic promise. The grille itself is recessed by 45mm compared with Rolls-Royce Ghost. The surround has also been lengthened by 40mm while the bumper has been designed to incorporate the number plate surround with a focused lower air dam.

Recessed and finished in black, the lower valance mesh helps create depth to echo that of the grille. Chrome blades plant the car, complementing horizontal lines that accelerate the sense of flow around the exterior.

Gentle evolution is also a theme of the 102-year-old Spirit of Ecstasy figurine. Positioned further forward on the grille and angled by five degrees, her eager position draws the eye up and along the bonnet, helping define the development of three harmonious lines: the waftability line, waist line and roof line.

Beauty in profile
In side view, it is the fastback that most clearly sets this latest Rolls-Royce design apart from its thoroughbred stable mates. There is a dramatic combination of linear tension and expressive line that bestows Wraith with such an elegant yet uniquely powerful character.

Developing from the masculine frontal architecture, the linear formality of the waist line gently dips to the rear providing a sense of stability and effortless poise. This combines with the expressive gesture of the window graphic that sweeps downwards to the coach door swage line and gives expression to that essential Rolls-Royce trait of waftability.

Frameless coach doors and the absence of a b-pillar further augment elegance and drama. Perfectly sized to complement long front wings, these are the epitome of effortless entry and egress, but also impart a sense of theatre and occasion that are so important to Rolls-Royce customers. Doors open to reveal an exquisite interior and are closed from inside at the touch of a button.

With all four windows down, the side opening adds length and a sense of waftable debonair to Wraith's character. The elegant chrome side finisher frames this graphic beautifully and pulls the eye seamlessly down onto the rear wheel. For further open view touring enjoyment, a fixed glass roof can also be specified, complete with leather sun blind.

In Rolls-Royce Wraith's design, every detail has been considered; stainless steel door handles for example conceal barrel locks maintaining clean exterior panels. Three new wheels have also been designed to fit like a tailored shoe. Confident yet understated, these include a standard 20" seven spoke design along with optional 21" seven spoke part polished and 21" five-spoke part-polished, bi-colour choices.

Architecture in two-tone
The wide rear track reinforces the promise of Wraith's athletic prowess and powerful intent. Prominent rear shoulders with powerful wheel arches nestle the tapered glasshouse, so beautifully accentuated by the raked rear screen. These design elements present the perfect three dimensional canvas for a two-tone paint scheme that further enhances the unique, architectural design qualities of Wraith and hints at a nautical theme.

The fastback
The origins of fastback design lie in the streamlined design era of the 1930s. Initially popular in America, the word fastback soon came to define the spirit of adventure and dynamism that epitomised early and mid 20th century European sporting and GT cars.

Rather than take inspiration from any one car, Wraith simply evokes the alluring pedigree of some of the most iconic designs from this influential era.

Creating a visible distinction between a sporting GT and a true Rolls-Royce was very much key to the success of Wraith's modern design statement. Whilst the striking silhouette of the long fastback hints at a sporting dynamic, Wraith is clearly a consummate gentleman's gran turismo. The perfect balance has been struck between the visual language of the fastback's heyday and a thoroughly contemporary Rolls-Royce motor car. Traditional high-seating position and Rolls-Royce proportions remain, leaving the beholder in no doubt that it is true to the marque's DNA.

Luxurious interior
Rolls-Royce Wraith's coach doors open to present an inviting, harmonious interior space - one with every possible comfort, delivered in a thoroughly modern way.

The eye is immediately drawn to the contemporary panelling that elegantly adorns the inside of the doors and sweeps round the entire lower space. Finished in either wood or leather, the effect draws the eye quickly around the cabin, similar in dynamic effect to the clean fastback style of the exterior.

Canadel Panelling
Wraith's mellow interior is the perfect space to present the debut of a very special new wood treatment , Canadel Panelling, a beautiful open grain wood. In this wood configuration, the car stands as a testament to the skills of craftspeople in the wood shop at the home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England. Every detail has been carefully considered; the veneer gently curved to hug the contours of the doors, delighting the eye as well as increasing space for occupants. In orientation the grain is angled at 55 degrees increasing dynamic flow through the interior. Echoing the wood craftsmanship of its pinnacle stable mate Phantom, Canadel Panelling is bookmatched throughout, creating a perfect mirror image through the centre console and featuring a contemporary chevron pattern that runs through the centre of the car, adding to the sense of cutting edge dynamic.

Dynamism... and delicacy
The dynamic theme is reinforced when viewed from the driver's seat. Black chrome dials are framed by a black horseshoe sweep. Blood orange tips to gauge indicators pay homage to the marque's aviation heritage whilst the steering-wheel is thicker rimmed to build dynamic intent.

Starlight Headliner presents a starry night sky within the cabin, an effect that is achieved with 1,340 individual fibre optic lights hand-woven into the leather roof-lining by craftspeople in the Rolls-Royce Leathershop.

ENGINEERING
One hundred years ago Rolls-Royce entered the gruelling 1913 Alpine trial with four 75hp cars. It won six awards, including the Archduke Leopold Cup.

Under the stewardship of founding forefather Sir Henry Royce, engineering credentials that had been established through events like the London to Edinburgh top gear trial in 1911, were further reinforced by this astonishing achievement. A series of Alpine Eagle cars were subsequently produced by the company.

But 1913 also represented another dynamic milestone for the company, one which the Honourable Charles Rolls would have cherished, had he not tragically perished in an aircraft accident two years earlier.

For in that year, Don Carlos de Salamanca took to the wheel of a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost and won the first ever Spanish Grand Prix. The victory built on racing success such as the 1906 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, where Rolls himself had triumphed in a Light Twenty.

After 190 miles of competing, the grand prix winner emerged relaxed and serene, a picture that continues to define the Rolls-Royce driving experience today. The power that underpins any modern Rolls-Royce is always delivered effortlessly, never brutally.

Rolls-Royce engineers were acutely aware that the most powerful Rolls-Royce in history would have to deliver dynamism and agility, without any hint of compromise to the famous magic carpet ride. Wraith stands as a testament to their skills, the ultimate gran turismo, and a car that remains true to values of quality, luxury and excellence in engineering.

Drivetrain
Wraith is the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever to have played host to the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figurine. It develops 624 bhp, from a 6.6 litre twin-turbo V12, an engine that features direct petrol injection to maximise efficiency and reduce emissions. Should they wish to take advantage of the extraordianary power at their disposal, drivers may choose to be propelled from rest to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds (0-62 mph, 4.6 seconds) and on to an electronically governed top speed of 155 mph.

Power is transmitted - effortlessly - thanks to an eight speed, automatic ZF transmission. The combination of powerful engine and sophisticated transmission leads to immediate power delivery with 800 Nm of torque available to the driver from 1,500 rpm.

The sense of scale is illustrated deftly by the power reserve gauge on the fascia. This reveals how much power is available should it be needed - or simply desired - by the driver at any time during a journey.

Rolls-Royce Wraith also features the ability to multi-shift down gears. When the accelerator is pushed rapidly, the car knows that the driver is seeking to maximise acceleration and it moves directly to an appropriate lower gear.
