Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Bernar Venet, 2012

  • Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Bernar Venet, 2012

French artist Bernar Venet has been invited by Bugatti, legendary supercar-maker, to create a work of art that combines the artist's vision and passions with Bugatti's celebrated Veyron Grand Sport. Through a congenial synthesis of artistic concept and technical possibilities, Venet has created an object that integrates the symbol of speed with a fascinating, painterly exterior and an interior that alludes to haute couture. This one-of-a-kind sculptural work will be on view at the Rubell Family Collection in Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach.

Bernar Venet remarks, "A Bugatti is already a work of art in itself, one that transports both its beholder and its driver into new dimensions of reality. I realized how I could translate my passion for mathematical equations and scientific treatises into three-dimensional form. My works are usually self-referential. So I found the idea of translating the equations of the Bugatti engineers onto the bodywork of the car very appealing. It was, so to speak, a logical conclusion and a new challenge in terms of the specific form of collaboration and implementation. To me, the result is also exceptional when measured by artistic standards and bestows the object with a mythical character."

The artistic avant-gardes of the first half of the twentieth century found inspiration in the car as an object of desire; they depicted it in drawings, paintings and sculptures that projected absolute speed as their point of orientation. In the 1970s, the car served as an unconventional canvas for many artists, such as Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, who painted what became known as "art cars". This practice continued to be embraced in the 1980s.

Since the 1990s, international artists have concentrated on exploring the shifting cultural historical significance of the car. This has resulted in sculptural and conceptual responses such as those by Erwin Wurm, Gabriel Orozco, Christoph Keller, Olafur Eliasson and Damian Ortega, which tend to contextualize the car as a paradigm for the acute social and cultural changes of a globalized world.

Bernar Venet´s approach is radically different from these movements and art works. He takes on the Bugatti Grand Sport by selecting a totally original solution, which distinguishes itself from the more traditional work of his predecessors. The application of mathematical formulae calculating the enormous power of the Bugatti engine on the car itself, allows him to implement the self-referential character inherent for his paintings. In doing so he pays tribute to the genius of technological science as well as the German Know-How of automobile production.

In his 2012 artistic adaptation and exploration of the Bugatti Grand Sport Bernar Venet has combined image and object to highlight the fascination with this model's absolute beauty and speed. His work unites a conceptual approach and sculptural craft on equal footing. In this work for Bugatti, Venet links the Pop artists' claim to the car as a canvas with the utilization of every technical and aesthetic means available for designing the fastest and costliest car in the world today. Venet incorporates signs taken from the realm of production into his visual idiom and creates a total work of art that harmonizes object and outer surface, interior and exterior, and evokes the exhilarating speed of the Bugatti Grand Sport.

Achim Anscheidt, Chief Designer at Bugatti, states, "Our collaboration with Bernar Venet, one of the most demanding artists of our time, has led to creative impulses and inspiration that will continue to motivate us in the fields of concept and design. We are pleased that this collaboration has resulted in the creation of a significant, collectible work of art. The self-image of the Bugatti brand derives from an artistic identity that unites sketch, drawing, technical planning and realization into an intermedial whole. Bernar Venet doubly honors our brand by making reference to the technical formulae of our engineers without fully revealing their secrets. It is an homage to the principle of dialogue and to the human capacity to question and redefine established boundaries. Venet is always focused on the essentials and so is Bugatti."

The Rubells have a long history with the artist, and Mera Rubell notes, "Our friendship with Bernar Venet began in the mid-1970s. Our young families bonded over dinners and great conversations in his SoHo loft. The children played and the adults engaged in endless talk about contemporary art. Don [Rubell] and Bernar have always shared an obsession with the beauty and complexities of mathematics. When we met Bernar he was already an accomplished artist and a very intuitive collector of emerging art. We benefitted from his generous insight into the artist's perspective and his artwork has been part of our collection since the 1970s. Bernar's life-long, signature obsession with mathematical formulas has found a ready-made canvas on the Bugatti, which is both original and dynamic. We're proud to present the Venet/Bugatti collaboration at our Foundation's museum."

BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept, 2013

  •  BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept, 2013

The latest generation of the BMW 3-Series Coupe and Convertible leads the way worldwide in the premium mid-range coupe and convertible market. Indeed few, if any, rivals have made such a defining impact on this segment in terms of design, dynamics and efficiency.

Now, with the unveiling of the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept, BMW is looking ahead to the fourth generation of its sporty mid-range coupe - and reasserting its global leadership credentials in the process.

The "4" - a sign of greater exclusivity and presence.
The BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept adds a new dimension to the qualities of the BMW 3-Series Coupe in terms of aesthetics, dynamics and elegance. The "4" doesn't just mark the start of a new cycle, it represents the zenith of a development curve. BMW has given the new model its own individual character and a standalone design - and, in so doing, has turned "4" into segment shorthand for aesthetic and dynamic appeal. The latest addition to a nomenclature that sees BMW building on the fine tradition of its large BMW 6-Series and BMW 8-Series Coupes, the "4" stands for greater sportiness, greater exclusivity and even clearer differentiation from the BMW 3-Series range.

The design: a development curve reaches its zenith.
The BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept allows the driver to experience the essence of this new, sporting and elegant generation of car in the lap of contemporary luxury. An array of high-quality details provide an exclusive showcase for the car's perfectly balanced coupe proportions. Inside, the expertise of BMW Individual, skilled handcraftsmanship and carefully selected materials combine to create a supreme interior. The role of BMW Individual in the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept's development clearly underlines the brand's commitment to challenging itself constantly in pursuit of perfection.

Lower and wider stance sharpens dynamics before a wheel is turned.
The dimensions of the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept imbue the car with a dynamic presence even when it is standing still. The wheelbase (2,810 mm) is 50 millimetres longer than that of the existing 3-Series Coupe, while 45 mm has been added to the front track (1,545 mm) and 80 mm to the rear track (1,593 mm). At 1,826 mm wide, the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept is 44 mm broader than its predecessor, its roof line is 16 mm lower (1,362 mm) and it is also longer (4,641 mm) - all of which makes for exceptionally dynamic proportions.

Perfection in proportions.
A BMW Coupe is surrounded by a halo of fascination, and one glance tells the observer all he needs to know about the driving experience on offer. The elegant lines and athletic surface interplay of the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept embody the qualities and expertise of BMW design and shine out through its sporting silhouette. The car's proportions also fit the familiar BMW template: its long wheelbase, long sweeping bonnet, set-back passenger compartment and short overhangs propel the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept forwards even before its engine stirs into life. At the same time, its stretched proportions exude a very athletic elegance - the rear wheel arches mark the widest point of the car, emphasising the point - and taut lines and surfaces etch emotion and precision into the body. The Coupe's sophisticated detailing also captures the imagination on closer inspection. Functional elements such as air intakes and vents, door openers and exterior mirrors are given a stylistic lift by classy satin-finish aluminium accents. The exceptional dedication of the designers in achieving the right look for each particular function is evident in every one of these details.

Precision and sportiness in the front seats.
Precise contours and multifaceted surfaces define the striking face of the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept. The hallmark BMW front-end features, notably the kidney grille and twin circular headlights, have a slim, sporty design and ensure the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept is immediately recognisable as a BMW. The front-end design displays a clear link with the BMW 3-Series family, but its sporting take on the theme accentuates the dynamic leanings of the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept.

The new concept car lavishes both front-end design icons with meticulous detail and three-dimensional depth. The kidney grille is closed off in the interests of optimising aerodynamics and keeping fuel consumption low, and the areas between the elaborately designed, satin-finish grille slats are blanked off by dark surfaces.

The full-LED headlights are a hexagonal, extremely technical-looking take on the customary BMW twin circular design. The dynamically chiselled, slimmer interpretation of this iconic design cue integrates seamlessly into the front end. The design of the headlights adopts the link between the lights and kidney grille familiar from the BMW 3-Series and takes it to the next level, rendering this connection visible in darkness as well. An optical fibre leads out from the inner headlight tube and forms a visual link between the inner headlight and the kidney grille. In so doing, it gives the front end of the Coupe an even broader look.

The most eye-catching feature of the car's nose beyond the familiar BMW kidney grille and twin circular headlights is the large air intake in the front apron. Its wide opening hints at the extra air required by the powerful engines and guides the eye around to the muscular flared wheel arches. The two vent surrounds on either side of the intake replicate the contours of the hexagonal headlight graphics to lend the front end an even wider and more sporting look. Three strikingly sculptured, satin-finish aluminium trim elements in the intake provide added presence. Eye-catching and extremely width-accentuating, they give the aperture a sporty three-way split. The sides of the two flanking vents are of differing thickness and lend the front end a particularly dynamic appearance. At the same time, they mark off specific areas of the intake for brake and oil cooling and for the Air Curtain. This EfficientDynamics feature channels the incoming air around the outside of the wheels, ensuring the airflow "hugs" the wheel arches and fuel consumption is noticeably reduced as a consequence.

A side order of power and elegance.
Flowing, typically BMW proportions and a stretched silhouette define the athletically elegant side view of the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept, with elongated lines and expressively contoured surfaces providing a lively interplay of light and shadow. The gently downward-sloping roofline - a classic coupe feature - creates a smooth transition into the rear, stretches the overall appearance of the car and takes the elegant route to accentuating the sporting appeal of the car's flanks. The side windows also adhere to the slim and stretched theme. The striking exterior mirrors extend organically out of the shoulderline and provide another example of the eye for detail which allows aerodynamic function to be integrated neatly and with emotional appeal into the car's form. The BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept boasts elegantly moulded shoulders, and surfaces and volumes blend harmoniously as the roof slopes down into the rear. The result is a sporty C-pillar design, which merges flawlessly into the sleek silhouette.

Below the side windows, the "double swage line" familiar from the BMW 3-Series range lends the car a dynamic sense of forward motion. The shadowed surface above the rear wheel shrinks significantly below the swage line. This accentuates the muscular contours around the rear wheels, emphasising the car's dynamic flair and hallmark BMW rear-wheel drive.

The Air Breather, an aerodynamically effective aperture behind the front wheels, offers another pointer to the sophisticated aerodynamics of the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept. It draws a dynamic path between the two light surfaces of the car's flanks, replicating the prominent form of the stylistic front-end elements. The Air Breather brings together the priorities of BMW EfficientDynamics and time-honoured BMW design, and works in tandem with the Air Curtain in the front apron to ensure an effective reduction in drag around the wheels. Exclusive 20-inch light-alloy wheels add the finishing touches to the car's dynamically elegant silhouette. Their sophisticated, prominently three-dimensional multi-spoke design underscores their air of sporting elegance.

Broad, sporty stance at the rear.
The sporting character of the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept continues in the low-slung design of the rear. The prominent horizontal lines and stretched tail lights positioned at the outer edges of the rear draw extra attention to the muscular wheel arches and wide track. The design of the rear window has a lowering effect on the car's tail and gives the body as a whole an even more powerful look. It also shows off the car's broad shoulders with satisfying clarity. The horizontal lines of the rear end frame a subtle three-dimensionality, while a tightly structured concave indent in the rear creates shadowed surfaces and gives the car a forward-surging energy. This contrasting interplay of light and shadow brings extra vivacity to the rear end.

The L-shaped rear lights of the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept blend harmoniously into the car's overall design. They continue the path of the swage line to the side and are absorbed as an integral part of the exterior design. The tail lights taper in towards the centre of the rear end, but flare out powerfully towards the outer edges, underlining the Coupe's broad, squat stance on the road. The inner elements of the rear lights recall a sculpture of contorted surfaces. A full-sized light element here reproduces the signature BMW "double L" in three-dimensional form and with impressive depth. While the emitting surfaces shine brightly, those at the back are rather darker, rendering the strong sense of three-dimensionality visible when the lights are hot as well.

The most striking element of the rear end is the bumper, in which a clearly defined trim element in satin-finish aluminium provides a classy lower edge as the car drops down towards the road. The trim element adopts a similar three-way split to the front air intake, but in a width-emphasising form. It picks up the two exhaust tailpipes in a dynamic sweep at the outer edges of the rear apron before diverting the gaze to the wheels. Small upturns next to the tailpipes lend additional dynamic flair and finesse.

The interior bathed in subtle beauty.
The interior of the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept follows the traditional BMW recipe, blending sportiness and exclusivity stylishly into a single package. The interior wraps around the driver in typically BMW, driver-focused style. The most important controls for driving the car are grouped ergonomically around the driver to ensure all functions are within the easiest possible reach. The "layering" approach - whereby volumes are arranged into layers through the clever use of lines and surfaces - underlines the dynamic feeling inside the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept.

This dynamic use of lines continues into the door design. All the lines streak backwards towards the rear of the car, thus pulling the focus of the interior clearly towards the front. At the same time, clearly defined surfaces around the window sills and door trim panels converge via the B-pillar into the rear in a tightly structured horizontal movement and connect the front and rear compartments. The arrangement of volumes around the doors, side walls and window sills forms a kind of cocoon around the passengers and generates a sporty and secure sense of space. Added to which, the strong contouring of the rear seats makes them appear like two individual seats joined together, emphasising once again the sporting instincts of the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept.

Craftsmanship, sustainability and technical refinement.
Developed by BMW Individual, the colour and materials design of the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept is tailored precisely to the geometry of the interior. The two-tone Black and Schiaparelli Brown trim provides a particularly effective showcase for the interplay of forms in the front cabin, and light contrast stitching adds a fresh touch to the leather-covered surfaces. This exclusive trim consists of sustainably tanned leather, which makes a convincing case for itself with its natural feel and soft texture, as well as the environment-friendly tanning process used to produce it.

The fine detailing of the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept exterior is continued inside the car, numerous elements of which reflect the exceptional attention to detail with which the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept has been put together. As well as discreetly embossed "BMW Individual" lettering on the seats and door sill strips, the seats are also home to very special hand-braided leather trim elements, which run vertically down the seats and enhance the interior's feeling of class. The likewise leather-covered cup holders also adopt the braiding theme, as do the floor mats.

A Natural Chestnut fine wood trim strip adds the finishing touch to the exclusive interior. The combination of carefully selected, high-grade materials, sophisticated details and the extensive use of handcraftsmanship fills the BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept with an ambience defined by contemporary luxury. The Liquid Metal Silver exterior colour developed exclusively for the concept car shows off its expressive exterior design to excellent effect and injects an extra dose of energy into the interplay of contours and surfaces.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster, 2013

  •  Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster, 2013

The Aston Martin is lifting the lid on an extreme new sports car with the global debut of the Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster.

The new sports car, available as a limited edition in selected markets worldwide, immediately becomes the most potent example of the open-top Vantage range and mixes the breath-taking power of Aston Martin's naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 engine with the established thrills of Vantage Roadster driving for what is an unforgettable sports car experience.

The Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster's 6.0-litre engine, mated as in the Coupe to a six-speed manual gearbox, generates 517 PS at 6,500 rpm and a muscular 570 Nm of torque at 5,750 rpm. It has been intelligently packaged into the Vantage Roadster's compact form to fully exploit the sports-orientated model's ample natural agility.

The naturally-aspirated V12 provides high levels of power and torque yet it delivers a flexible, refined driving experience illuminated with the potential for truly electrifying performance. The 0-62 mph sprint is dispatched in just 4.5 seconds while this most potent Aston Martin Roadster is capable of 190 mph.

While the Roadster naturally shares much of the technical and specification features of the V12 Vantage Coupe, some elements are redesigned to take account of the Roadster's neat packaging and engaging dynamics.

The Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster features a redesigned rear boot lid and lower front air intake to maintain a level of dynamic performance that's fully in keeping with the V12 Coupe, while there are also a number of unique chassis revisions. These include a modified rear damper set-up, front and rear damper valve tuning and a new rear spring design.

These changes, in conjunction with Aston Martin's use of Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, ensure the sports car delivers dramatic straight-line performance as well as outstanding handling.

Styled to be as beautiful as it is potent, the new Roadster boasts a number of eye-catching additions that underline its sporty characteristics. Carbon fibre side strakes; a carbon fibre front splitter and rear diffuser; carbon fibre mirror caps and carbon fibre rear lamp infills - plus the new forged alloy wheel design - should leave the sports car cognoscenti in no doubt that this is a truly exclusive Aston Martin.

At the rear, the boot lid on the Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster incorporates a more pronounced 'flip' to reduce rear lift and improve stability at high speeds. The V12's diffuser houses a large, centre-mounted oil cooler and two large tail-pipe finishers.

As with the front splitter, the carbon fibre rear diffuser is hand-made to ensure the direction and consistency of the weave and ensure the best possible finish.

The inside, there are other distinguishing features that make the new car stand out from its illustrious siblings in the sought-after Aston Martin V8 Vantage and V12 Vantage line-up. Subtle additions such as the use of glass switches in the lower centre stack elevate yet further the luxurious ambience in the Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster cabin.

While for those seeking the ultimate in Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster personalisation, a package of interior trim comprising carbon fibre facia and carbon fibre gearshift surround is available.

Unique to the V12 Vantage and new V12 Vantage Roadster is the engine's "Sport" mode button, which enables the driver to select between two different powertrain modes.

Normal mode is the default from start-up and provides not only a more relaxed throttle response but also a quieter, more refined exhaust note. This creates a more progressive throttle response, suited to 'everyday' situations such as when driving in heavy traffic.

Sport mode, meanwhile, is designed for use in more dynamic driving situations where sharper responses are required. It has a number of tangible effects on the powertrain including a sharper throttle response, with the engine delivering more torque during the early stages of throttle pedal travel. Exhaust system bypass valves are also kept open for longer to create a particularly sporty exhaust note.

Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer Dr Ulrich Bez said: "The V12 Vantage models are, first and foremost, driver's cars - inviting and fully rewarding the driver's full involvement.

He added: "I believe no other car in this class offers the combination of the V12 Vantage Roadster's prestige, six-speed manual gearbox and the unique enjoyment that driving a high performance convertible can deliver."

The new Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster is priced at £150,000 RRP in the UK.

Acura NSX Concept, 2013

  •  Acura NSX Concept, 2013

At the 2013 NAIAS Acura unveiled a new NSX Concept that showcases the evolution of the next-generation supercar's styling and design, including a first-ever look at one possible direction for the next-generation NSX interior design.

"This further evolution of the Acura NSX Concept design is remarkably true to the original concept styling," said Mike Accavitti, vice president of national marketing operations. "We're making great progress in delivering on the expectations we created a year ago, with advanced technology that will bring new levels of performance and a unique, dynamic experience to the exotic sports car market."

The new Acura NSX Concept is based on the expected underpinnings of the vehicle Acura will bring to market. Still, the new NSX Concept maintains its low and wide stance with the dynamic and alluring proportions that debuted in the original NSX Concept at the 2012 North American International Auto Show - highlighted by clean, modern and simple surfacing, and edgy details that communicate supercar attitude and a high-tech feel.

The new Acura NSX Concept also features a first-ever look at one potential direction for the next-generation Acura NSX interior design. The design concept is founded on a "Human Support Cockpit" theme, a strong expression of Acura's product direction focused on "the synergy between man and machine." The interior package boasts outstanding visibility, an exotic driving position, and an intuitive "Simple Sports Interface" that minimizes interior clutter, allowing the driver to focus on the driving experience.

"Consistent with the spirit of the original NSX, our intention is to support the psychological and emotional aspects of driving a super car at the limit, because we are insistent about delivering on the synergy between man and machine," said Jon Ikeda, chief designer, Acura Design Studio. "Importantly, this will be true of all Acura vehicles moving forward."

With the aim of delivering a new sports car experience that combines next-generation supercar dynamic capabilities with advanced environmental performance, Acura announced a year ago that the Acura NSX will be powered by a mid-mounted, direct-injected V-6 engine mated to Acura's Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) system.

Acura Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is an all-new, three-motor high-performance hybrid system that combines torque vectoring all-wheel drive with advanced hybrid efficiency through the use of three electric motors - one motor integrated with the V-6 engine and two motors driving the front wheels - along with an all-new dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The system enables instant delivery of negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering to achieve a new level of driving performance unparalleled by current AWD systems.

The new NSX is being developed by a global R&D team led by designers and engineers at Honda R&D Americas, Inc. located in Los Angeles, California, and Raymond, Ohio. The new NSX will also be manufactured at a new production facility in central Ohio.

BMW 3-Series Long Wheelbase, 2013

  •  BMW 3-Series Long Wheelbase, 2013
At the international automobile trade fair Auto China 2012 in Beijing, the German premium automobile manufacturer BMW will not only be presenting its new edition of the BMW 3-Series sedan, but also unveiling a model variant tailored specifically to the requirements of Chinese customers. The new BMW 3-Series sedan with the long wheelbase is a fascinating marriage of elegant and commanding design and a luxurious interior ambience. Its independent character is also underscored in the rear by the most generous and comfortable space in the competitive field. Besides the long wheelbase BMW 5-Series sedan, it is now the second model of the brand to be offered exclusively on the Chinese automobile market and produced in Shenyang. At the same time, the new, globally available BMW 3-Series sedan with the normal wheelbase enjoys its highest ever status as the sportiest model on the segment. BMW is therefore honing its alignment to the expectations of the various target groups on the Chinese automobile market and promising the driving pleasure so characteristic of this brand in either an emphatically exclusive or consistently dynamic design.

Both variants of the new BMW 3-Series sedan were developed together in Germany and exhibit the typical basic properties of the premium automobiles from this brand: aesthetic design, ultra-modern engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology, and progressive equipment, like the BMW Head-Up Display, which is unique in this class. Auto China 2012 will also be presenting the BMW ActiveHybrid 3. This full hybrid model of the new BMW 3-Series will likewise be available on the Chinese automobile market before the year is out.

The combination of pioneering technology from Germany and exclusive production in China will lend an unmistakable character to the new BMW 3-Series sedan with the long wheelbase. Tailored specifically to the wishes of Chinese customers, independence is guaranteed by the 110 mm longer wheelbase. These elongated proportions not only increase the knee and leg space in the rear, but also contribute greatly to the elegance and presence of the sedan. With its optimised travel comfort and look, the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan has everything needed to convince the serious business traveller and provide hours of leisurely driving pleasure either alone or with all of the family. Additional accents can be set with the BMW Lines, offered for the first time in China, whose precisely compiled design and equipment features underscore either the progressive or the luxurious character of the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan.

The new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan is available in three engine versions, delivering 135 kW / 184 bhp in the BMW 320Li, 180 kW / 245 bhp in the BMW 328Li, or 225 kW / 306 bhp in the BMW 335Li. Both the two four-cylinder variants and the top model with its six-cylinder engine are fitted as standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Besides the unusually high efficiency of the engines and gears, the extensive BMW EfficientDynamics technology also contributes to an excellent relationship between driving performance and fuel consumption in these models developed exclusively for the Chinese automobile market. The standard equipment includes e.g. brake energy regeneration, the automatic engine start-stop function, and the ECO PRO mode, which can be activated at the driving experience switch.

The new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan will be produced by the new Tiexi plant at the Shenyang site. Production proceeds according to the strict quality standards applied to the whole global production network of the BMW Group and in close collaboration with local production partners and parts suppliers. In Shenyang, the BMW Group has been producing automobiles since 2003 with its joint venture partner Brilliance. In order to increase the production capacity, both partners recently passed a motion to invest about a billion euros in both the present and the additional plant at the Shenyang site. This will allow the company to meet the constantly growing demand for premium automobiles in China. In 2011, China was the world's third largest sales market for the BMW Group.

Design: dynamically elongated proportions, elegant lines, precise details.
The BMW 3-Series is the most-sold premium automobile in the world. Based on the sixth generation BMW 3-Series sedan, a new model with a longer wheelbase will now be unveiled that has been developed exclusively for the Chinese automobile market. Its body incorporates the design language of the new BMW 3-Series sedan as an independent interpretation, lending intensity to its elegance and luxury. The proportions characteristic of the brand are shaped by the short overhangs, the long engine compartment, the back-set passenger compartment, and the long wheelbase. Compared with the new BMW 3-Series sedan, both the length of the vehicle (4734 mm) and its wheelbase (2920 mm) were each extended by 110 mm, with the width (1811 mm) and height (1455 mm) following suit.

Balled propulsive power and presence find expression in the design of the vehicle's front section. The contours of the engine compartment lid run in a V shape towards the BMW kidney grille placed right at the front. The contours of the headlamps reach towards the kidney grille, and, together with it, form a horizontal graphical unit that emphasises the width of the vehicle. A hallmark of the brand, the twin circular headlamps present across their tops a partially occluding trim panel, giving rise to the characteristic look of concentration. Depending on the model, chrome elements under the headlamp units and at the transition to the BMW kidney grille underscore the high quality claims of the front view.

Also the air inlet, divided into three segments and embedded between distinctively moulded surfaces, presents a conspicuously wide design, providing a marked distinction from the front view of the BMW 3-Series sedan with the normal wheelbase. Its independent contours are aligned to the look of BMW models from higher segments. At the outer edges of the side inlets, so called air curtains in the form of vertical openings serve to optimise the flow of air in the wheel arches.

A charming play of light and shade effects are provided by the beefy wheel arches, precision-fitted surfaces, and the interaction between the hallmark bead line at the height of the door opener and a suggestive second character line over the front wheel arches. In the characteristic language of BMW, the design presents authentic signs of this sedan's properties. These include a dynamic, wedge-shaped side view and its vibrant run of surfaces representative of marked agility. The beefy rear wheel arches point to the wide track and the drive power acting on the rear axle.

All lines and surfaces have been tuned precisely to the specific dimensions of the new BMW 3-Series sedan with the long wheelbase. The harmony of proportions characteristic of the BMW 3-Series is therefore maintained. At the same time, the elongated appearance of the side view communicates an elegance known from higher vehicle segments. A new interpretation takes the form of the BMW hallmark Hofmeister kink at the rear end of the side window surrounds. For the first time, the chrome frame proceeds in a straight line from the counterthrust at the base of the C column towards the rear, thereby extending the horizontal run of the window cavity covers. This unmistakable attribute underscores the elegantly elongated side line and hence the extended space.

The rear view of the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan is dominated by the horizontal lines and the beefy wheel arches. Also the L-shaped rear lights on the outer sides merge harmoniously into the overall look, emphasising the wide track and therefore the stable roadholding of the vehicle. On the six-cylinder BMW 335Li, this impression is boosted further by the double-flow exhaust system's tailpipes placed at the outer edge. One specific attribute of the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan is the chrome trim arranged above the number plate surround on the luggage compartment lid and serving as a link between the rear light units. This is supplemented with additional chrome trim at the bottom of the rear apron.

Interior: driver orientation, luxurious ambience, excellent travel comfort in the rear.
The interior of the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan intensifies the experience of the hallmark driving pleasure and the premium character. Designed for enhanced driver orientation, the cockpit presents an instrument cluster based on black panel technology and a steering wheel with multifunction buttons. The centre console is inclined slightly towards the driver, presenting all controls at optimised ergonomic positions. The engine can be activated at the press of the start-stop button as soon as the radio-operated key is inside the vehicle. Next to the gear selector switch for the automatic transmission, there are two cup holders, the driving experience switch for individual setups, and the controller for the iDrive operating system, which also includes the free-standing onboard monitor. The high-resolution flat-screen design optimises the selection and control of vehicle, infotainment, and navigation functions. Fitted as standard, the automatic air conditioning includes temperature and ventilation control that can be set separately for the driver and front passenger sides.

The luxurious ambience is borne by high-quality materials, precision workmanship, and the interior surfaces matched perfectly to the choice of design and colours. In particular the rear presents a travel comfort that is yet to meet its match on the vehicle segment. Designed for enhanced comfort, the rear presents a row of single seats that are setting a new standard for available space. The new BMW 3-Series sedan with the long wheelbase offers particularly convenient access and generous leg space for rear passengers. The knee space is 90 mm longer than in the new BMW 3-Series sedan with the normal wheelbase and is therefore the best in the competitive field.

The large number of equipment features in the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan underscores its orientation to comfort. The rear presents a centre armrest with integrated compartment and two cup holders, two illuminated vanity mirrors folding out of the roof liner, and BMW Individual reading lights. Also fitted in the rear are ashtrays integrated in the door trim panels and a switch unit that can adjust the front passenger seat. Moreover, the sedan is fitted with a lighting package, including ambient light, and roller sun blinds that are opened and closed electrically on the rear window and mechanically on the side windows.

The safety equipment in the sedan, besides the front and side airbags and side curtain head airbags for both rows of seats, also includes ISOFIX child seat mountings in the rear. The 480-litre luggage compartment can be expanded when needed at the 40:20:40 split and folding rear backrest. In conjunction with the optional Comfort Access, the rear lid can be opened remotely.

BMW Luxury Line: refined elegance and exclusive flair.
The new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan embodies premium quality, driving pleasure, and travel comfort on a level unique to this vehicle segment. Its character is defined by pioneering technology and a luxurious ambience - and both can receive additional emphasis from the BMW Luxury und Modern Lines, offered for the first time in China as an alternative to the basic version. Each of these characterisations is communicated to the full effect by the precisely matched design and equipment features. Likewise the dynamic alignment of the normal wheelbase sports sedan can be lent even greater emphasis from a BMW Line. The BMW Sport Line is offered for the new BMW 3-Series sedan.

As an extra highlight underscoring the classical elegance of the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan, the BMW Luxury Line includes exclusive 17" multispoke light-alloy wheels; B column covers and window cavities in High-Gloss Black; grille bars; inlays for the air inlets and tailpipe trims in chrome; and additional applications on the side sills. The inscription "Luxury" can be found on both the side panels and the door sill cover strips. Also the interior lends expression to the exclusive character in the form e.g. of its leather trim in one of three colours; a sports leather steering wheel; chrome surrounds for the centre console and the air conditioning and audio controls; interior strips of fine inlaid Walnut, and an accentuation strip of Glossy Pearl Chrome. In addition, the Luxury Line sedan provides user-definable colour schemes for the welcome and ambient light. A chrome trim can also be found on its vehicle key.

BMW Modern Line: natural charisma, progressive style.

Likewise available for the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan, the Modern Line presents design and equipment features that lend expression to the sedan's style, testifying to its efficiency, sustainable quality, and pioneering technology. This is carried by refined and modern accentuations like tailpipe trims; grille bars; air inlet bars; window frames; aluminium satinated applications on the side sills and roof trim; the B column covers and window cavities in High-Gloss Blach; and the 17" light-alloy V spoke wheels. For the BMW 335Li, the Modern Line also includes 18" turbine design light-alloy wheels.

A particularly harmonious ambience is provided by the light-coloured dashboard and the Dark Oyster steering wheel, supporting a consistent brightness in the interior without stark contrasts. This progressive charisma is underscored further by the Black or Oyster leather trim with decorative seams and the interior strips of Fineline wood with chrome accentuation. Additional features of this BMW Line are the inscription "Modern" on the side panels and door sill cover strips; user-definable colour schemes for the welcoming and ambient light; the chrome surrounds for the air conditioning and audio controls; and the vehicle key unit in Oyster.

BMW Sport Line: dynamic presence, striking accentuations.
Available for the BMW 3-Series sedan with the normal wheelbase, the Sport Line presents striking High-Gloss Black accentuations, underscoring the dynamic presence of this new model. Eight highly stylised, black grille bars lend the front a commanding appearance of particularly sporty flair. The black inlays in the front apron visually magnify the air inlets and underscore the beefy wheel arches. There, the suitable sporty elegance is carried by the 17" light-alloy double-spoke wheels. Like the B column covers and the window cavities; also the exterior mirrors are available in High-Gloss Black. The visual impression of rear width is boosted by the black decorative trim along the bottom edge of the rear lights. The tailpipe trim presents a Black Chrome finish.

The sporty exclusive flair in the interior finds expression in the contrasts between the black and red accentuations. The sporty flair in the cockpit is underscored by red decorative rings and red chrono scaling on the circular instruments, red decorative seams on the sports steering wheel, and High-Gloss Black trim with a coral red accentuation strip. The standard sports seats in leather trim are available in one of three colours with exclusive accentuations. These are joined by the chrome surrounds for the air conditioning and audio controls and the inscription "Sport" on the door sill cover strips. The distinguishing feature of the Sport Line, the ignition key, is black with a red decorative inlay.

Engines: supreme power and pioneering efficiency thanks to BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology.
The unique status that premium automobiles from the BMW brand enjoy all over the world is linked closely to the brand's characteristic driving pleasure. In the new BMW 3-Series sedan with the long wheelbase, this is the result of the outstanding competence the company has brought to bear in the field of drive development. The engines fitted in the models BMW 335Li, BMW 328Li, and BMW 320Li are designed for an impressive delivery of sporty and supreme power. And their pioneering efficiency is equally convincing. Both the inline six-cylinder engine in the BMW 335Li and the four-cylinder drives in the two other models feature the latest development of BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology. This includes a twin scroll turbocharger, direct high-precision petrol injection, the variable valve control system VALVETRONIC, and the variable camshaft control system double VANOS.

The BMW 335Li is fitted with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine featuring this technology package. Its supercharging system directs the pulsing gas flow through three separate cylinders arranged in a spiral around the turbine. Arranged directly next to the spark plug, the injectors direct the air-fuel mixture precisely dosed into the combustion chambers. Power delivery and efficiency also benefit greatly from the VALVETRONIC integrated completely in the cylinder head and the camshaft adjustment for the intake and discharge side (double VANOS). In this manner, the multiple-award-winning six-cylinder petrol engine can deliver a max power output of 225 kW / 306 bhp at a speed of 5800-6000 rpm and a max torque of 400 Nm between 1200 and 5000 rpm. The BMW 335Li accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. Its average fuel consumption as determined in the EU test cycle is 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres, and its CO2 emissions are 192 grams per kilometre.

BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology also helps the four-cylinder engine in the BMW 328Li to achieve an extraordinary relationship between performance and fuel consumption. With a capacity of 2.0 litres, the new engine delivers a max power output of 180 kW / 245 bhp between 5000 and 6500 rpm. The max torque of 350 Nm is reached at speeds between 1250 and 4800 rpm. The BMW 328Li sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. Its average fuel consumption as determined in the EU test cycle is max 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres, and its CO2 emissions are 167 grams per kilometre.

Delivering 135 kW / 184 bhp between 5000 and 6250 rpm, also the four-cylinder variant with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology provides for sporty performance in the BMW 320Li. Spontaneous power delivery and high-revving properties also characterise this engine, which delivers its max torque of 270 Nm between 1250 and 4500 rpm. The BMW 320Li needs 7.9 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h. Its average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres, and its CO2 emissions are 160 grams per kilometre.

Unique on the segment worldwide: eight speed automatic transmission.
The BMW 3-Series sedan is the world's first vehicle on its segment to feature an eight-speed automatic transmission. The new BMW 3-Series sedan with the long wheelbase is fitted as standard with this innovative power transmission system, providing an extra boost to its sporty flair and efficiency. The fascination of this eight speed automatic transmission lies in its extraordinarily fast gear shifts and a particularly precise control that supports direct downshifting to a specific gear.

Thanks to its unique mount on the wheel set, the eight-speed automatic transmission also exhibits a compact design and a low weight. Its size and weight are therefore comparable with the six-speed automatic transmission fitted in the predecessor model. The equipment includes an optional eight-speed sports automatic transmission that is characterised e.g. by an even higher level of dynamic shifting and also includes shift paddles on the steering wheel.

BMW EfficientDynamics: innovative technology for greater driving pleasure with reduced emissions.

The consistent use of technology serving to cut fuel consumption and emissions is propelling the current BMW models to leading efficiency positions on all segments. In this respect, outstanding performance always goes hand in hand with particularly low fuel consumption. Also the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan is setting standards in this field on its segment. Its engines and transmissions are characterised by extraordinarily high efficiencies, and in addition it is fitted as standard with BMW EfficientDynamics technology.

All variants of the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan come with an automatic engine start-stop function as standard. This eliminates idle phases during temporary stops by switching off the engine automatically. As soon as the vehicle comes to a stop, the engine is switched off automatically. When the road ahead clears again, the driver simply has to remove his foot from the brake, and the engine starts without any further delay.

In addition, all engine variants come with the driving experience switch that activates ECO PRO mode. This affects the engine control, the accelerator pedal curve, and the shifting characteristics of the automatic transmission. This supports a fuel-optimised driving style at low engine speeds. Particularly efficient energy management is supported by a controller designed specifically for regulating the power functions like air conditioning, seat heating, and exterior mirror heating. Dedicated displays provide information e.g. on the extended range in kilometres now possible. Details of efficiency-optimised driving are also providing for the current situation in the form of ECO PRO tips that appear on the instrument cluster and control display.

Also a standard feature, brake energy regeneration is an intelligent energy management system that concentrates the generation of onboard electricity over the thrust and brake phases. The BMW EfficientDynamics technology also extends to the needs-based control of auxiliary units and electromechanical steering. Also, intelligent lightweight structures and tyres with reduced rolling resistance contribute to optimised fuel consumption and emission values.

Ideal balance of sportiness and driving comfort.

The new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan combines the brand's hallmark sporty flair with specifically optimised driving comfort. This is carried by the particularly high-quality suspension technology, the perfect support for this successful concept with longitudinal engine, rear wheel drive, balanced axle load distribution, and torsionally stiff body. The sedan features a detailed further development of the two-joint spring strut front axle with extensive use of aluminium components for high rigidity and optimised weight. Also the five-link rear axle is based on an established principle, providing the ideal conditions for a balanced overall setup. At the same time, agility and precision regulated handling are provided together with outstanding suspension comfort.

One essential contribution to the characteristic BMW driving experience also takes the form of the precision steering that provides the driver with exact feedback at all times. This steering system finds the ideal basis in the characteristic BMW drive concept, which shields it from drive effects. In the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan, an electric motor provides the power for the electromechanical hydraulic steering. This is active only when powered steering is actually required. On straight roads and in corners taken at a constant steering angle, no electrical power is therefore consumed.

In addition to the powerful brake system, unrestrictedly effective even under high loads, also the standard Dynamic Stability Control DSC contributes to the agile handling properties of the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan. This system includes e.g. the antilocking system ABS, dynamic traction control DTC, cornering brake control (CBC), and dynamic brake control (DBC). Additional functions now also include a brake assistant, fading brake support, a dry brake function, a drive-off assistant, and the electronic locking function for the rear axle differential (active in DCS OFF mode).

All variants of the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan are fitted with light-alloy wheels as standard. These are 16" on the BMW 320Li, 17" on the BMW 328Li, and 18" on the BMW 335Li.

Driving experience switch: vehicle setup at the push of a button.
The driving experience switch fitted as standard on the centre console activates the vehicle setups "COMFORT", "SPORT", "SPORT+", and "ECO PRO". The driving experience switch affects the accelerator pedal progression, the engine response, the characteristic curve of the steering servo, the DSC configuration, and the dynamic shifting properties of the automatic transmission. In each case, the driver activates a preconfigured setup for a harmonised world of experience.

In vehicles fitted with the Professional navigation system, the control display can present the specific details in the "SPORT" and "SPORT+" modes. These details inform the driver of the engine power drawn and the current torque level.

BMW ConnectedDrive: new functions for comfort, safety, and infotainment.
The progressive character of the new BMW 3-Series sedan with the long wheelbase finds impressive testimony in the wide range of driver assistance systems and mobility services unique in the competitive field. The options provided by BMW ConnectedDrive serve to optimise the comfort, safety, and infotainment in the vehicle over an intelligent network of links. Its highlights include the Surround View system, the BMW Head-Up Display, and the apps facility.

The equipment supplementing Park Distance Control (PDC) includes a reversing camera integrated under the BMW brand logo in the luggage compartment lid and the Surround View system including Side View. The Surround View system also utilises two cameras in the side mirrors in addition to the reversing camera and the PDC sensors. The data thus captured are processed by a central computer. This then generates an image on the control display that shows the vehicle and its environment from the bird's eye view. This depiction allows particularly precise manoeuvring in a confined space.

When the situation demands this, the driver can also make use of the Side View function as a subsystem of the optional Surround View. Side View works with two cameras that are integrated in the front wheel arches and that allow the driver to observe traffic coming from the side. These images are also presented on the control display. This not only simplifies manoeuvring, but also warns the driver of oncoming traffic from the side when the vehicle is leaving confined spaces like back-set gates or multistorey car parks.

Also the BMW Park Assistant is available as an option for the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan. This system assists the driver in manoeuvring safely and comfortably into tight parking spaces aligned parallel to the direction of travel. Featuring ultrasound sensors in the side indicator surrounds, the BMW Park Assistant can also help the driver to find a suitable parking space. While manoeuvring into a parking space, the driver need only control the accelerator and brake pedals and keep an eye out for possible dangers. The Park Assistant also takes over the steering wheel. The driver is given instructions on how to manoeuvre into the parking space.

Optimised display quality is provided by the latest generation of the BMW Head-Up Display, also available for the new, long wheelbase BMW 3-Series sedan. The graphics now benefit from the entire colour spectrum, with realistic symbols projected at the optimal ergonomic position on the windscreen. Also the scope of information presented on the Head-Up Display has been expanded. Depending on the vehicle configuration, this may also include check control and status messages from the driver assistance systems in addition to the current road speed and high guiding instructions from the navigation system.

The highest demands for infotainment are fulfilled by a particularly powerful interface technology that safeguards the unrestricted use of external mobile phones and music players in the new BMW 3-Series sedan. This presents the passengers with their personal music library, read from their smartphone or music player in the vehicle. The onboard monitor then presents the saved music titles and their cover art in addition to the playlists. The Apps option provided by BMW ConnectedDrive and the application BMW Connected also allow Apple iPhone users to utilise additional web-based services in the vehicle. These include a web radio function and access to social networks.
