With one of the most famous names in automotive design behind it, the new Korando takes on a modern, stylish SUV shape reflecting the rugged appeal that lies at the heart of today's SsangYong Motor Company.

Looking outside of Europe, the SsangYong Korando brand is already one of the strongest in the SUV market. Indeed, Korando is listed in the Korean Guinness Book of World Records as the country's longest surviving automotive brand. With its roots stretching as far back as 1974, the Korando started a new chapter in Korean car making as the first-ever self-developed four-wheel-drive model to come from the country in 1983. The next significant evolution in 1996 was the adoption of Mercedes-Benz diesel technology when the third generation model was introduced.

Epitomising economic ethos of spending less without compromising on quality, the Korando is perfectly placed to meet the needs of downsizing drivers. The compact C-segment sized SUV market now accounts for more than half of the total SUV market in Europe, and this proportion is expected to grow in the coming months and years.

The new powertrain - efficiency and performance combined
An all-new model deserves an all-new powertrain - and the SsangYong Korando's new e-XDi200 engine is at the very heart of the crossover's appeal. With a high power output of 175PS, superb combined cycle fuel economy of 6.0 l/100km (47mpg) and CO2 emissions of only 157g/km the SsangYong Korando can challenge the very best rivals. Refinement is a key strength of the new 2.0-litre diesel engine which is offered with both manual and automatic six-speed transmissions to power both front and four-wheel drive Korando models.

Cabin comfort at the core of Korando design
Making the most of its commanding driving position, the SsangYong Korando offers superb cabin comfort and interior ergonomics. No matter what the surface, a smooth ride quality has been achieved with the adoption of a double bush type sub-frame mounted suspension system, while extensive NVH engineering isolates occupants from external interruptions.

Specification that puts passenger safety first
Passenger safety comes first. Six airbags - dual front, side and curtain - are fitted as standard, while there is also multi-function ESP (Electronic Stability Program), which integrates anti-rollover protection, brake assist, hill start assist and ESS (Emergency Stop Signal). Other standard safety features include first row active head restraints and ISOFIX.

Crossover to the Korando
The SsangYong Korando is a model which has been designed to reaffirm SsangYong's position in the minds of the European car buyer. Far from merely fulfilling the basic needs of the consumer, design innovations have been offered to tempt buyers away from established competitors. The eco cruise control system efficiently manages the amount of fuel injected to maximise economy, a door mirror mounted LED puddle lamp helps passengers get in and out safely and comfortably even in dark areas and the Korando's towing ability has been at the core of its development from day one.

Recognising the desires of many drivers to stamp their personality on their new car purchase, the SsangYong Korando is offered with a choice of seven exterior colours and a combination of interior shades and materials including luxurious leather seats. Buyers also have the option of a special interior specification which features a unique orange highlight colour.

Korando will be revealed this autumn through the over 1,240 strong SsangYong international dealer network before starting on its journey to strengthen the SsangYong Motor Company's brand. The first SsangYong Korando models delivered to UK buyers in January 2011:

STYLING & DESIGN
As one of Europe's most respected designers, Giorgetto Giugiaro was brought onboard from the early stages of development to position the SsangYong Korando perfectly into the competitive crossover market. The result is an elegantly proportioned shape which is perfectly in-tune with the design themes of the moment.

The strong, charismatic front end of the Korando sets the tone for the sharp lines that punctuate the dynamic silhouette. Embodying the SsangYong design theme of 'elegance within strength', the Korando brings a fresh take on SUV styling to the crossover market.

Exterior design: robust aesthetics
When creating the fourth generation SsangYong Korando, designers had strong themes in mind. Conveying the strength and toughness of SsangYong's SUV building history with an adventurous spirit keen to explore both the wild countryside and the urban jungle, the Korando's crossover body took shape.

The high bonnet line gives a sense of power and pays tribute to the go-anywhere abilities of SsangYong SUVs, while the perfectly balanced six-point radiator grille and angular headlamp shape are both poised and athletic.

The two-tone bumper shape was designed to express the SUV's stability and toughness. This is complemented by the mesh radiator grille, bold air intake and chrome trim to make a strong and powerful statement.

At the rear the design statements are equally bold. A defined line runs from the front headlamp to the rear lamp cluster, following the contours of the body and emphasising the Korando's shape. The rear light clusters have in-built lenses to appear completely red despite housing the turn indicators and reversing lamps.

One of the key design characteristics of any Giorgetto Giugiaro designed model is the perfect proportion. Study the SsangYong Korando in profile and you will see how this pillar of automotive design has been applied to provide the optimum balance, with a beltline that begins as a diagonal and finishes as a curve to emphasise the presence of both toughness and speed.

The harmony of a neat glass area and the distinctive C-pillar shape is the essence of the robust design that gives a sense of power to the whole vehicle.
Adding visual strength to the Korando's SUV shape, substantial wheelarches draw the eye to the raised ride height. However, the arches retain a utilitarian black finish to add to the feeling of robustness that's lacking in so many compact SUV models.

With its perfect proportions, toughness throughout and the attention to detail achieved only by the finest automobile designers, the SsangYong Korando comes equipped with the very finest European design.

Interior design: premium space
The Korando's interior combines the Oriental ethos of moderation and elegance. The result is a cabin which uses subtle design detailing to punctuate a spacious and practical interior which meets the needs of the most demanding crossover buyer.

Central to the design of any automotive interior is the driving environment. The SsangYong Korando's instrument panel is simple and elegant, with two large dials separated by a digital display. A modern, uncluttered control layout features chrome coloured trim to highlight the flowing lines.

Particular attention has been paid to the look and feel of the main cabin controls. The tactility of the dials and switches has been developed to convey a feeling of quality and robustness in keeping with a crossover model.

Of course, practicality hasn't been forgotten either, with drinks holders front and rear along with secure stowage spaces for everything from portable music players to maps. The luxurious seats offer an added dimension of versatility and comfort, with the option to fold the second row flat to leave an even more practical luggage area.
With the Korando's interior, designers have succeeded in maximising space, comfort and practicality in a high quality, driver-centric cabin.

Colour design: the finishing touch
With the fundamentals of a class leading cabin design complete, choosing the perfect colour palette was the finishing touch to the SsangYong Korando's interior.

In order to satisfy diverse consumer needs, classy black and natural beige form the basis of the key interior colours. Paying particular attention to the young and active drivers for whom the crossover market often holds most appeal, a special orange highlight colour can be added to the black interior to add a sporty finish.

Just as important as colour is the material used to create each interior part. The Korando cabin is trimmed with everything from attractive chrome and metal accents to premium quality soft-touch plastics. Anti-bacterial paint is also used to enhance the wellbeing of occupants.

As for exterior colours, a total of seven tones are available including vibrant Vitamin Red and striking Ice Blue.

Performance
The diesel engines used to power SsangYong models have long been one of the marque's key strengths. Combining the traditional virtues of high performance and outstanding durability with superb economy and refinement, the new e-XDi200 diesel engine is the perfect powerplant for the Korando.

The 2.0-litre e-XDi200 engine provides a maximum power output of 175PS and peak torque of 360Nm, representing a 20 per cent improvement over its predecessor. Optimum torque is delivered across a low yet broad rev range of 2,000-3,000rpm, leading to effortless acceleration from low engine speeds thanks to SsangYong's E-VGT (Electric Variable Geometry Turbocharger).

Not only is it fully compliant with Euro5 emissions regulations, but the e-XDi200 engine is also designed to fulfil the requirements of the future Euro6 rules. This has been achieved with the help of a range of technological advancements including third generation 1,800 bar common rail fuel injection, E-EGR (Electric Exhaust Gas Recirculation), swirl control valve and CDPF (Catalysed Diesel Particulate Filter). The swirl level has been made flexible for different gear ratios to achieve the cleanest possible diesel combustion.

The result is highly frugal combined cycle fuel economy of 6.0 l/100km (47mpg) and CO2 emissions of only 157g/km. Such impressive efficiency can only be achieved through the implementation of a range of measures throughout the SsangYong Korando's design.

The SsangYong's kerb weight is only 1,672kg (manual version) thanks to various weight saving measures including the use of an oil separator integrated plastic cylinder head cover. Lowering friction has also played its part, with low tension piston rings, plateau honing and low viscosity oil all helping to reduce energy losses.

Advanced engine control devices have also been developed including a dual knock sensor and a system to optimise intake and fuel injection according to driving conditions. A rapid temperature elevation warm-up system is also in place to improve the engine's performance in cold start and warming-up situations.

Efficiency and performance are only two-thirds of a modern diesel engine's requirements - refinement is equally important. That's why the e-XDi200 engine minimises NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) with decoupling technology and an advanced balancing system to drastically reduce booming noise in the mid to high speed range. The engine itself has also been made quieter by acoustically tuning the layout of the chain system to reduce unwanted noise.

The final test for any new engine is reliability, and the Korando's new powerplant has passed the Mercedes-Benz durability test with flying colours. This is the world's toughest examination for any new engine, designed to test it to the limit before it is fitted under the bonnet of a production model. The final seal of approval was given to the new Korando's engine only after it had also undergone extensive real-world test driving in both the hottest and coldest of environments.

AWD
To suit the needs, expectations and budget of all types of crossover driver the SsangYong Korando is offered in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive (AWD) forms. While variants feeding power only to the front wheels will offer the lowest price entry into Korando ownership, SsangYong's advanced AWD system makes the most of the model's dynamic abilities both on and off road.

The SsangYong Korando's AWD is an on-demand system. By monitoring the grip level, the technology can determine the driving conditions and traction available before distributing power to the wheels that need it most.

Under normal driving conditions 100 per cent of the engine's torque is driving the front wheels so that the Korando can run with the efficiency of a family hatchback. However, as soon as the front tyres begin to lose traction, power is fed to the rear wheels to ensure safe, stable and dependable progress is resumed. The technology also comes into play when pulling away on a steep slope, allowing the SsangYong Korando to drive off from a standstill smoothly and safely every time.

What's more, the AWD even has a special in-built self-protecting function. If a driver fits a different type of tyre or has extreme differences in wear between front and rear tyres, the driving power going to the rear is reduced to prevent any damage to the transmission.

Calling on its 4x4 know-how, SsangYong hasn't forgotten that many Korandos will find their way off the beaten track on a wintery adventure or towing a caravan on a sodden campsite. That's why engineers have fitted an AWD lock mode to manually force the spread of power between the front and rear wheels at speeds below 25mph.

All this only adds to the SsangYong Korando's credentials as a class leading towing vehicle. The SsangYong has been engineered to pull a braked trailer weighing as much as 2,000 kg, while an unbraked trailer of 750 kg also poses no problems. Keen caravaners have already been impressed by the Korando's statistics, and are sure to fall for its all-round abilities with a load in tow on the road.

With or without a trailer, at the core of the AWD Korando's engineering is safety. When working with ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), the four-wheel-drive system provides the best possible grip and control whatever the conditions.

Transmission
Surpassing many of its rivals, the SsangYong Korando offers a choice of two six-speed transmissions to crossover drivers.

In the UK the six-speed manual transmission is expected to be fitted to the majority of Korando models. Using a wide spread of ratios, the gearbox has been developed to improve launch acceleration while also offering low-engine-speed high-economy running at motorway pace. Efficiency and durability have also been improved by optimising oil lubrication, while particular engineering attention has been paid to reducing gear whine at all speeds.

Unlike many of its rivals, choosing the SsangYong Korando's automatic transmission doesn't mean giving up any gear ratios. The six-speed auto takes the same wide-ratio spread approach as the manual to minimise its impact on economy, emissions and refinement. Drivers can also take manual control at any point using the shift lever or steering wheel mounted switches.

Technologies such as variable solenoid control, fully adaptive input control and electronic shifting have been used to automatically detect how the driver wants the gearbox to operate. Shift refinement has also been at the forefront of the transmission's development along with efficiency. Just like every other aspect of the Korando's mechanical systems, the transmission suffers minimal power and friction losses thanks to the use of variable line pressure control and low viscosity ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid).

Suspension & Running Gear
The new crossover SsangYong Korando uses a combination of technologically advanced systems and engineering to achieve optimal driving performance and minimise Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH). Details of each system/area can be found below.

EPS (Electric Power assisted Steering)
SsangYong's EPS uses an electric motor to provide the perfect amount of assistance to the driver when turning the wheel. The system is speed sensitive, offering maximum assistance during parking manoeuvres and greater feel out on the open road. A further advantage is improved efficiency over traditional hydraulic power steering systems.

Optimal Ride & Handling
To compliment SsangYong's first monocoque construction, compact sub-frames are installed at the front and rear. This not only provides ride and handling characteristics much closer to a conventional road car rather than an off-roader, but it also dramatically improves the cabin's insulation from bumps and ridges in the road. At the front, side load springs are used to minimise friction and in turn improve both noise levels and durability. Coil springs are fitted to the rear sub-frame to improve overall driving comfort. Extensive engineering development has gone into the blocking of any sub-frame leaning when cornering, helping the Korando to maintain a flat, neutral stance.

Drive Shaft
The drive shaft sends power to the AWD system and normally consists of steel tubes and universal joints. However, this set-up didn't measure up to the high standards of NVH expected of the SsangYong Korando. Instead, a constant velocity joint and rubber couple is used, achieving lower noise levels at high, constant speeds. What's more, this set-up reduces shock and vibration when cornering, further improving refinement and comfort.

Sound Insulation Optimisation
Another further improvement in the comfort and enjoyment of every drive is the reduction in sound entering the cabin. Heavy-layer and polyurethane sound absorbing/blocking materials have been used both behind the dashboard and under the floor to minimise any intrusive noise. Further sound insulation is also provided by a felt material fitted between the engine and the cabin, while a final layer of sound absorbing material is fitted to the dashboard.

Off-Road Capacity
While the Korando is more at home on the tarmac than ever before, off-road capability hasn't been sidelined. The Korando has a ground clearance of 180mm, approach angle of 22.8 degrees, departure angle of 28.2 degrees and ramp angle of 18.5 degrees. The result is a maximum climb angle of 48 per cent (AWD, 33 per cent for 2WD), a roll over angle of over 40 per cent and a wading depth of 300mm.

These statistics give the crossover model the sort of off-road ability that goes far beyond the expectations of many drivers, but which allows rough tracks and steep inclines to be tackled without costly body or mechanical damage.

SAFETY
One of the main attractions of an SUV is the feeling of safety and security afforded by a high driving position and robust body. The challenge with a crossover model is to offer genuine advances in safety without suffering the penalties of increased weight and reduced efficiency which afflict traditional off-roaders.

In order to meet the demands of the most safety-conscious crossover buyer, the SsangYong Korando has an energy multi-dispersion structure which channels the force of a front-end impact to the vehicle body through three load channels, including the front sub-frame. This spreads the energy from a crash to minimise the forces felt by passengers and any resultant injuries.

In the case of a rear-end impact, a crash box made from high-tension steel acts as a buffer, absorbing crash energy together with the rear bumper to protect vehicle occupants. Both front and rear-end structures have also been designed to minimise the potential danger to pedestrians.

With many Korando buyers likely to have a young family, the addition of the international standard ISOFIX car seat mounting system is a vital feature, allowing child seats to be installed easily and securely every time.

While some rivals might charge extra for vital safety equipment, the SsangYong Korando comes as standard with the full complement of six airbags. Dual airbags are fitted for the driver and front passenger, while side and curtain airbags will deploy in the event of a side-on crash. There is also a state-of-the-art safety restraint system in place to stop passengers from being thrown out of the car in a rollover accident.

Another safety enhancement comes in the shape of the latest active head restraint system. An electric signal is detected by the sensor in the event of a rear-end crash and instantly moves the front head restraints forwards and upwards to reduce any potential neck injuries.

However, there's more to safety than merely considering the worst-case-scenario high speed impact - slow speed accidents also require engineering development to minimise repair bills and insurance costs. A high tension steel crash box is installed at both the front and the rear to reduce the damage caused by low-speed bumps. The design enables easy repairs to be carried out to vehicles which have absorbed collision energy into their crash boxes rather than costly chassis and body parts.

While reducing the consequences of an accident was at the core of the new Korando's development, helping drivers to avoid collisions in the first place was equally important. The newly developed ABS/ESP system compares the driver's inputs to the steering, throttle and braking with the vehicle's status and controls the engine, transmission and braking systems to ensure maximum possible safety in every instance. The system can even detect an abnormal situation, for example when the accelerator and brake pedals are accidentally pressed at the same time, and operate an override function in which the engine will return to idle to help prevent any potential accidents.

What's more, the SsangYong Korando's ESP system also works along with HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist) to apply the maximum braking force in an emergency, decreasing stopping distances when the driver isn't able or experienced enough to apply full pressure to the brake pedal. ARP (Anti Rollover Protection) provides further driver assistance by preventing instability during sudden changes of direction. To make pulling away on a slope easier and safer HSA (Hill Start Assist) is also fitted, while ESS (Emergency Stop Signal) warns following vehicles of emergency stops and ABS activation.

COMFORT & CONVENIENCE
Despite having dimensions compact enough to fit into the city, the Korando offers the practicality required of a family car. Its wide interior offers the practicality of an SUV with the proportions and running costs of a conventional compact family hatchback, making the Korando the perfect transport for both everyday use and leisure activities.

The convenience begins in the driver's seat. Various storage spaces are available including a centre fascia tray, a door pull handle tray and a large map pocket. The prominent digital read-out also gives the driver all the information they need when heading out into the great outdoors for a spot of mountain biking or canoeing, including both external and internal temperature and humidity. This trip computer also displays information about fuel consumption and range capability.

Over on the passenger side, the glove box contains a partition tray and a credit card holder, while there's also the added convenience of a hook to secure a carrier bag.

The SsangYong Korando's wide track ensures that passengers will be comfortable whether they are sitting in the front or the rear. Those in the back benefit from a flat floor without an intrusive transmission tunnel, while the second row seats can be split 60:40, fold & dive and recline to provide various seat variations.

Lift the Korando's tailgate and a spacious 486 litre luggage area complete with a large under-floor tray. The luggage cover is also removable, while a hanger on the roof and a hook to fix a load net add to the SsangYong's practicality.

With a level of convenience normally only offered by premium saloons, the SsangYong Korando provides plenty of attractive features. Top of the list for many will be the standard fit Bluetooth audio system, which not only allows calls to be made and received via a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone but also provides the ability to stream music via a suitable device.

When the driver uses the remote key fob to unlock the vehicle, both the interior and door mirror mounted puddle lights are illuminated to light the way. Both are also lit automatically when the driver removes the key from the ignition and opens the door.
Other convenience features include automatically folding/unfolding mirrors, which are operated when the doors are locked/unlocked using the remote key.

When the Korando reaches 18.6mph (30km/h) the doors are automatically locked, but in a crash situation in which the airbags are deployed, the locked doors will automatically unlock, the interior light will turn on and the hazard lights will be activated.

Looking after the wellbeing of occupants is at the core of the SsangYong Korando's cabin design. That's why various switches have been treated with paint that prohibits the growth of microbes to prevent the spread of germs.

Security is also assured thanks to a standard fit alarm and immobiliser.

Exclusive Super Bee Content Inside and Out
The race-inspired interior of the 2012 Charger SRT8 Super Bee features the SRT exclusive three-spoke contoured performance steering wheel, exclusive Z-stripe cloth performance seats with amped yellow and silver striping in both the front and rear as well as silver accent stitching and embroidered Super Bee logos on each of the front seat headrests.

The instrument panel also features the Charger Super Bee logo on a unique dash plaque.
Newly modified software includes the appearance of the Super Bee logo in the center instrument panel's Electronic Vehicle Information Center at vehicle start up.

On the exterior, the Dodge Charger Super Bee features a unique SRT badge with a 3-D helmeted bee mascot on the new split crosshair grille finished in Gloss Black.

Satin black hood graphics mirror the black decklid stripes with a solid wide center line flanked by solid dual tracer lines on the Stinger Yellow model, while charcoal gray graphics are used on the hood and decklid of the Pitch Black model. Both front fenders tout the historically significant V-8 engine with "392 HEMI" badges first seen on the 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392. Flanking both rear fenders are the legendary round Super Bee graphics, which now include the wording "Powered by SRT" to commemorate the modern incarnation of this celebrated performance icon.

New 20 x 9-inch, five-spoke cast-aluminum wheels with black painted pockets developed specifically for the Super Bee models provide a unique performance look.

Available Goodyear F1 Supercar three-season, ultra high performance tires give the Super Bee tenacious grip on the road or track. Also available are Goodyear Eagle RS-A 2 all-season tires that make the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee an all-season performance machine.

Braking power for the Super Bee comes courtesy of SRT engineered Brembo brakes with vented and slotted rotors with four-piston Brembo calipers painted anodized black.

A limited number of 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee units will be built for the U.S. market. All Dodge Charger models are built at the Brampton Assembly plant in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.

Both Stinger Yellow and Pitch Black Super Bee models will be available for ordering in December at Dodge dealerships nationwide and will be arriving in U.S. dealer showrooms in the first quarter of 2012.

SRT's legendary performance
The 2012 Dodge Charger Super Bee is powered by the new 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 that delivers 45 more horsepower and 50 more lb.-ft. of torque than the 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 it replaces - up 11 percent to 470 horsepower (351 kW) and up 12 percent to 470 (637 N•m) lb.-ft. of torque.

World-class stopping power from 60-0 mph in 120 feet comes through 14.2 inch (front) and 13.8 inch (rear) vented/slotted rotors with four-piston Brembo calipers. Improved brake cooling and fade performance at all four corners comes courtesy of a new underbody belly pan with integrated brake ducting.
Performance numbers include 0-60 mph acceleration in the high 4-second range; quarter mile in the high 12-second range; 0-100-0 mph in less than 16 seconds; top speed of 175 mph and stopping power from 60-0 mph in 120 feet.

Super Bee history

The Dodge Super Bee, first introduced in 1968 as a member of Dodge's Scat Pack performance group, brought a high-performance vehicle to the low price class.
Based on the mid-sized Coronet model, the standard engine for 1968 was the 335 horsepower version of the 383 cubic-inch V-8 while the legendary 426 HEMI V-8 also was available.

The standard transmission was a heavy-duty four-speed manual with a Hurst Competition-Plus floor shifter. The power bulge hood let everyone know this was no ordinary car. The Super Bee could accelerate to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds and cover the quarter mile in 15 seconds. Not bad for a car that you could buy for a little more than $3,000.

In 1969, the radical 440 Six-Pack was added to the Super Bee's list of engine options. By placing three Holly two-barrel carburetors on top of the 440 Magnum V-8, the Super Bee generated 390 horsepower and 490 lb.-ft.of torque.

The Super Bee was switched to the Charger model for 1971 but continued to offer its impressive engine line-up, as well as its heavy duty suspension. The Hemi-power '71 Super Bee could reach 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and ran the quarter mile in only 13.7 seconds.

In its brief original four year run, the name Super Bee reached legendary status by giving the customer an ultra-high performance vehicle that they could drive to work during the week, yet take to the track on the weekend and outperform the competition.

For the 2007 model year, Dodge and SRT revived the Super Bee nameplate with the limited-edition Dodge Charger SRT8. It featured "Detonator Yellow" exterior color with black hood and deck-lid face, unique "hockey stick" stripes on the rear fenders, Super Bee logos on front and rear fenders, and contrasting yellow stitching on the seats, steering wheel and shift knob. The wheels were fully polished versus the stock SRT8 Charger which featured wheels with silver painted areas.

Powered by the 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 producing 425 hp and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, the 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee was the first special edition Charger from SRT. Only 1,000 units were built for the 2007 model year.

The 2008 Charger SRT8 Super Bee package featured a B5 Blue Pearl Coat exterior reminiscent of the blue used by Chrysler vehicles in the 1960s and 1970s. Instead of fully polished SRT8 Charger wheels, the "pockets" were painted black. Blue accent stitching inside replaced the yellow found on the seats and steering wheel from the previous model year. Only 1,000 units of the Charger SRT8 Super Bee were built in 2008.

In 2009, the Super Bee package featured Hemi Orange Pearl Coat paint with decals on the hood and rear quarter fenders; new Super Bee wheels with black anodized pockets with silver Brembo brake calipers. On the inside were orange accented seats and a serialized dash plaque. Only 425 units of the Super Bee were built in 2009.

The new Chrysler Ypsilon is a mix of segment-leading style, cutting edge technology, eye-catching design and world-class engines. All this is incorporated in a 3.8m long 5dr vehicle that's shorter than most of its rivals.

On sale in the UK now, the Ypsilon certainly isn't a conservative 'me-too' entry into the most hotly contested class of cars in Europe. It's a premium model in a small car's body; original, full of character and targeting drivers who appreciate quality, elegance and innovation in equal measure. It marks a resurgence for Chrysler Group LLC which was formed in 2009 as a strategic alliance with Fiat.

Chrysler's portfolio contains some of Europe's most recognisable vehicles, including the striking 300C saloon and top-selling Grand Voyager MPV. Now with the help of Fiat's experience and knowledge in the small and medium-sized car sectors, Chrysler can imbue compact, more environmentally friendly models with the luxurious character traits of its bigger cars.

The Chrysler brand director Nigel Land says: "Through the launch of Ypsilon and Delta we now have a range that encompasses both the small and medium passenger car markets with vehicles that are notably well designed, ensuring that they really are credible alternatives to the mainstream. They are equipped with all the features you would expect from a large Chrysler, integrated with stylish European designed interiors."

As well as bringing the Chrysler name to the supermini segment, the Ypsilon introduces a host of new technologies. For the first time in this class of car, buyers will have access to a raft of large car features such as Magic Parking, xenon headlights, Blue&Me™-TomTom LIVE and the Smart Fuel System.

On top of that, depending on the trim level they choose, buyers will be able to specify automatic climate control, fog lights, 16-inch wheels, cruise control, a leather steering wheel with audio controls, dusk and rain sensors, parking sensors and a 500-watt surround sound music system.

The Chrysler Ypsilon has been designed to compete in the increasingly popular supermini sector. To do so successfully it must appeal to a wide range of buyers, from down-sizers looking for an economical but comfortable small car, to those aiming to move up to a more luxurious model that is still affordable to buy and run. With a five-door body shape that has the appearance of a sporty three door thanks to hidden rear door handles, the Ypsilon combines practicality with good looks.

It's also one of the safest cars in its segment, featuring as standard up to six airbags, ABS anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC - standard on Auto, optional on SE and Limited), Anti Slip Regulation (ASR), traction control and Hill Holder.

This is underpinned by a lightweight, super-strong and safe structure that sits on a new specially designed suspension. And beneath the bonnet there's a range of class-leading engines including the 2011 International Engine of the Year, the TwinAir. With its two distinct 'characters', this diminutive 0.9-litre turbo gives drivers the option of a sporting drive or class-leading economy in a lightweight package.

The Chrysler Ypsilon's engine range is completed by a zesty 1.2-litre petrol and a potent 1.3-litre turbo diesel, all of which come with Start&Stop as standard, and promise improved refinement combined with reduced emissions and consumption.

To give Ypsilon owners even more choice there will be three trim levels at launch: S, SE and Limited. But there's a huge choice of options in an almost limitless number of combinations, enabling drivers to give their car the personal touch. There's are 16 elegant paint combinations of which four are bi-colour; five different upholstery trims, and three types of alloy wheel.

Owners can personalise their cars further at Chrysler UK dealerships where they'll be able to order special wheels, add stylish piano black interior trim and buy special key fobs to give their car unique appeal.

Combined, all these facets ensure Chrysler Ypsilon owners will easily stand out from the crowd. And they'll enjoy a comfortable, chic and responsible city runabout that's wrapped up in cutting edge technology.

HIGH SPEC AS STANDARD
The Chrysler Ypsilon might look like a small three door, but it's actually a five-door, the configuration that makes up 77 per cent of the supermini market in the UK.
At just 384cm long and 167cm wide, the Ypsilon is smaller than many of its supermini rivals. Yet it has one of the largest luggage capacities in its segment and is one of the best in class when it comes to passenger space. It also has class-leading versatility thanks to its five-door hatchback design. And it manages to cloak all this in an exterior that exudes a uniquely elegant style for such a compact car. Setting the windscreen further forward creates the illusion of a larger, sleeker vehicle. It has also allowed the designers to make the luggage capacity larger.

The Chrysler Ypsilon's height, and therefore its generous head room, is disguised by two sweeping curves. The first takes the line of the bonnet and extends along the waistline, going up into the rear pillar. The second rises with the A pillar to follow the upper arch of the glass. It then drops to follow the outer edge of the tailgate window. It's a theme the Ypsilon shares with its big brother, the Delta.

The interplay between the concave and convex nature of the sides combines with rear door handles concealed in the C pillar to give this five door the appearance of a more compact 3dr car.

At the front, and unusually for a supermini, powerful, projector-type headlights sit either side of Chrysler's new shield grille. These give the car a sophisticated appearance and make it seem wider than it actually is. At the rear, LEDs are used to draw minimum power from the battery while creating the maximum impression. The lights have been developed with Magneti Marelli Automotive Lighting, and at the front feature integrated Daytime Running Lights (DRL) which automatically turn on when the engine is started. Finally, the rear reversing light and fog light sit below the back bumper, neatly protected from the knocks that go hand in hand with urban motoring.

Inside Ypsilon
The Chrysler Ypsilon was designed to give a large car feel in a small car shape and the interior embraces this philosophy.
The dashboard has a line that traces the curve of the windscreen and ties it into the door panels to give the cabin a feeling of extra width.

The materials don't just give the illusion of comfort. An all-new roof lining reduces noise inside the passenger compartment by 2 decibels (dB). To demonstrate the significance of that improvement, a reduction of 3dB equates to a 50 percent drop in noise. The rear seats, each with three-point seatbelts, have been designed to be as supportive as a larger car's. And the front pair use new 'slim seat' technology for the first time to increase leg space for rear passengers.

The cabin isn't just a restful place to be, it's bright as well. LEDs are used to illuminate the dashboard. And the main instruments sit in a central display above the console housing the entertainment and ventilation systems, to create an inclusive environment for driver and passengers alike.
But it's the Chrysler Ypsilon's level of equipment that makes it a benchmark vehicle in its segment. It's the first supermini to include Magic Parking, Blue&Me™-TomTom LIVE, the Smart Fuel System and innovative headlight clusters.

Magic Parking
Finding a parking place in towns and cities is frequently a patience-testing experience, so the Chrysler Ypsilon can be specified with the innovative Magic Parking system.

Pushing a button on the dashboard activates the system which then uses radar sensors mounted in the front bumpers combined with wheel speed sensors to measure the length of empty parking spaces. If it detects one that is free from obstacles and is the length of the car plus 40cm at either end, the driver is informed by a beeping noise and a message on the dash. If the driver decides to park in it, the car's computer takes over the steering while the driver retains control of the accelerator and brake and is permitted a speed of just over 4mph. The driver can deactivate the system at any time, either by turning the wheel, changing out of reverse gear or pressing the button on the dashboard.

Blue&Me-TomTom LIVE
Every Chrysler Ypsilon can be specified with the latest and most versatile version of Fiat's award-winning Blue&Mesystem.
Each car can be equipped with the fitting for Blue&Me-TomTom LIVE. So even if owners don't specify it on purchase, they or future owners of their Ypsilon can buy it at a later date.

It's based on the TomTom Go1000 and features a touch screen that allows occupants to manage phone calls, satellite navigation and all the driver information required. It even allows control of a media player via the cutting edge next-generation touch screen.
It uses TomTom LIVE services which combine accurate traffic information, such as road closures or traffic jams, with dynamic route calculation. Chrysler Ypsilon customers will get a year's free subscription to LIVE. The removable screen sits in its special holder to the right of the steering wheel.

Other innovations
It's not just inside that the Chrysler Ypsilon is innovative. It also takes a step ahead of the competition with its Smart Fuel System. This device replaces the classic fuel cap and automatically opens and closes when the pump nozzle is put inside it. It makes refuelling easier and safer by reducing harmful gas emissions and fuel overflow. It also prevents 'misfuelling' as it's impossible to pump petrol into a diesel car (or vice versa) fitted with this system.

Setting itself further apart from rivals, new Ypsilon features a 360° 500-Watt sound system that's a unique factory fit option in such a small car. It consists of four 40W musical Dome tweeters, four 80W musical Neodymium mid-woofers and a digital eight-channel amplifier.

This then uses three signal processing methods simultaneously to increase the 'depth' and 'height' of the sound and equalise the stereophonic reproduction to produce a more enveloping experience for listeners.
All this equipment supplements a wide-range of standard kit. There's a height and reach-adjustable steering wheel, electric front windows, 60/40 (50/50 'S' model) split rear seat and height-adjustable driver's seat.

POWER AND ECONOMY COMBINED

The Chrysler Ypsilon benefits from some of the same cutting edge engine technology that has transformed Fiat Group Automobiles into one of the world's leading makers of environmentally friendly transport.

Three engine options are available, two petrol and one diesel. All come with the Start&Stop system as standard and all are Euro 5 emissions compliant. In the TwinAir model, a semi-automatic five-speed gearbox can be specified. All other models feature a five-speed manual transmission. All engines combine power with economy to ensure the Chrysler Ypsilon isn't just environmentally responsible and therefore economical to run, it's effortless to drive too.

1.2-litre Fire
The range starts with the latest evolution of the famous Fire engines family. This 1.2-litre eight-valve unit features continuously variable valve timing which optimises the opening and closing of the valves to ensure the engine still feels peppy while operating at maximum efficiency.
The engine develops a healthy 102Nm of torque at 3000rpm while power at 5500rpm is a respectable 69bhp. And thanks to Start&Stop, overall fuel consumption is reduced by 5 per cent while CO2 emissions are an impressively low 115g/km.

0.9-litre TwinAir
The other petrol engine available in the new Ypsilon is 2011's International Engine of the Year, the TwinAir. This combines Fiat Powertrain Technologies' (FPT) revolutionary MultiAir technology with a small capacity two-cylinder engine plus turbocharger.
The results are ground-breaking, giving the 875cc TwinAir more power (85bhp) and torque (145Nm) than the larger capacity 1.2-litre Fire engine. It is also more economical and at 97g/km (for the semi-automatic gearbox version), has the lowest CO2 emissions of any quantity production automotive petrol engine currently on sale.

The bedrock of the TwinAir is the MultiAir technology that underpins it. This system features electro-hydraulic valve management that reduces fuel consumption by controlling the air going into the engine via the inlet valves without using the throttle. It enables airflow to be managed cylinder by cylinder, cycle by cycle, phase by phase, according to the driver's and therefore the engine's requirements. By rigorously controlling the combustion process, pumping losses of around 10 per cent are eliminated, while valve control strategies can be optimised to reduce emissions and boost driveability through improved throttle responses.

The Twin Air also features an ECO button on the dashboard. By pressing it, torque is limited to 100Nm at 2000rpm for even greater increases in economy and reductions in emissions.

1.3-litre MultiJet
The third engine in the range is the lively 1.3-litre MultiJet II turbo-diesel with its 95bhp and 200Nm of torque at 1500rpm for effortless low speed cruising. This second generation engine is equipped with a variable geometry turbocharger, a new variable displacement engine oil pump and an alternator with 'smart charge'.

The engine features faster injectors than the first generation of its kind. Now with eight injections per cycle, it offers greater speed, flexibility and precision in its various phases of operation. By improving the combustion process in this way, operation is quieter while particulate and nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions are lowered.
The injectors are also simpler and with 40 per cent fewer components they're more reliable than their predecessor, thereby promising cheaper running costs.

Economy isn't solely enhanced by the capable engine line-up. Chrysler has left no stone unturned in its efforts to make the Ypsilon as economical as possible. As a consequence, it sits on new generation low rolling resistance Goodyear EfficientGrip tyres. These use new materials to make them 10 per cent lighter. This results in 1.9 per cent better fuel economy, which Goodyear estimates could save a driver 30.6 litres of fuel over 12,500 miles. These tyres are also longer lasting and offer greater braking capability.

Every Chrysler Ypsilon is equipped with Start&Stop and a Gear Shift Indicator (GSI). Specifically designed for city driving, Start&Stop is like having an invisible co-pilot who automatically switches off the engine when the vehicle is stationary. But all the systems that guarantee comfort and safety on board, such as the lights, climate control and windscreen wipers, remain operational. When either the system detects that the battery needs some charge, or the driver dips the clutch to engage first gear, the engine fires automatically.
By cutting the engine when it isn't needed, Start&Stop saves up to 15 per cent in fuel over the urban cycle. The GSI meanwhile helps the driver to change gear at the optimum point for best fuel consumption.

TOP PRIORITY FOR SAFETY
The new Chrysler Ypsilon has been engineered from the ground up to be more cosseting than any car in its class. The secret of its success here lies in the suspension, which is all-new front and rear.

The MacPherson front suspension uses a lower arm made of ultra-high strength material, while a modular cross member is made from low thickness, high strength steel sheets. As well as improving comfort, this helps dissipate impact energy through the car to make the Ypsilon safer. The front suspension also features shock absorbers with split mountings to transmit loads to the body through two different routes to filter out road vibrations better, and improve acoustic performance.

A new anti-roll bar has had its weight reduced and been connected to the shock absorbers to maximise its anti-roll effect. Lastly, new bushes have been designed for the front suspension. These have a lower dynamic stiffening than previously to maximise comfort on bumpy roads and reduce noise. A torsion axle is fitted at the rear. With new bushes, this guarantees greater comfort on bumpy roads and improves noise insulation without affecting road holding.

High strength materials have also been employed in the Chrysler Ypsilon's body. These improve the car's energy absorption characteristics in both front and side impacts, but also make it lighter to benefit fuel economy.

Another safety innovation employed on the new Ypsilon is the third load path. In frontal impacts this transfers crash energy to the lower, more resistant parts of the vehicle. It increases the vehicle's ability to absorb frontal impacts, helps control deformation of the passenger cell, and reduces the chance of intrusion to the passenger compartment.

High performance tempered steel has been used for the front bumper cross member, while the lightweight strong plastic Xenoy has been employed on the rear bumper cross member. The energy absorption material behind the third load path is made of a special highly absorbent plastic. This minimises damage in low speed impacts and reduces the risk of knee damage in pedestrian collisions.

It's no accident that all these features combine to make the new Chrysler Ypsilon one of the safest cars in its class. It was designed at the Fiat Safety Centre, and information was gathered from all possible types of accident including front, rear and side impacts, roll overs, pile-ups and collisions with pedestrians. The varying speeds at which impacts occur were also accounted for, as well as obstacles the car might collide with, and the physical shape and size of occupants.

Initial testing was carried out by virtual means, involving more than 20,000 hours of mathematical modelling. The results were then confirmed with more than 80 crash tests, 100 tests on a HyGe Sled and about 100 tests on components and sub- systems.
The Ypsilon features a wealth of safety equipment as standard across the entire range. There is VDC vehicle dynamic control (standard on Auto and optional on SE and Limited versions), complete with ASR traction control plus Hill Holder, and ABS anti-lock braking with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD).

Inside, there are up to six airbags (two each on the front, window and side - S versions have four airbags) and front seat belts with double pretensioners and load limiters. There are three-point seat belts across the rear passenger accommodation, (two rear seats on S versions), making this a realistically safe five-seater. Both front and rear seats are fitted with an anti-submarining system to prevent the body from sliding underneath the seatbelt, and the front seats have an anti-whiplash system to reduce the risk of injury in rear end collisions. Finally, ISOFIX attachments, which allow child seats to be securely fitted, are standard.

ACCESSORISE ALL AREAS
There is an almost limitless combination of options to enable owners to personalise their Chrysler Ypsilon.

Three basic trim levels are available: S, SE and Limited. Even the entry-level S trim, which is only available with the 1.2-litre engine, is a very well equipped supermini. Standard equipment features height adjustable steering wheel, electric front windows, 50/50 split rear seat, height-adjustable driver's seat, 15-inch wheels, premium fabric upholstery and heated rear window, radio with CD and MP3 player, plus the full complement of safety kit.

The SE specification adds manual climate control, electrically adjustable door mirrors, leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear-lever gaiter, and Castiglio upholstery available in either Romantic Gold or Urban Black designs.
Finally, with an eye very firmly on buyers who will be purchasing the new Ypsilon for its high specification, the Limited has rear electric windows, fog lights, 15-inch alloy wheels and leather upholstery.

Comfort, Convenience and Personalization - Crisp, smart and driver focused, the new Civic's 5-passenger interior is a careful blend of form and function, with an advanced instrument layout that is unique in its class. A "smart interface" approach divides the interior into different areas, with key instrument displays located above the steering wheel. Secondary information is located lower in the area, while a third area to the driver's right groups controls that are not essential to driving. New for 2012, the intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) on all models (except Civic DX) provides a 5-inch color monitor for the display of vehicle information and audio information including album artwork (if available). Powertrain
Honda has long been known for its world-class engine technology and a continuous process of innovation and improvement. At the core of Honda's powertrain engineering is the ongoing pursuit of greater performance, enhanced fuel economy and low emissions. The 2012 Civic model range embodies Honda's ongoing effort to offer a wide range of powertrain choices including gasoline, hybrid and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) that offer unique solutions for different buyers.

An advanced 140-horsepower, 1.8-liter i-VTEC engine is standard in the Civic Sedan, Civic Coupe and Civic HF, with a choice of a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission (automatic only for Civic EX-L Coupe, Civic EX and EX-L Sedans, and Civic HF). A variant of the same 1.8-liter engine develops 110 horsepower in the compressed natural gas (CNG) powered Honda Civic Natural Gas, which comes standard with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The performance-oriented Si model has a 201-horsepower, 2.4-liter i-VTEC engine, matched with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission. And finally, the Civic Hybrid is powered by an ultra-efficient 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine with Integrated Motor Assist® producing 110-horsepower. This is coupled to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

Civic Sedan, Civic Coupe, Civic HF and Civic Natural Gas Powertrain
The Honda Civic Sedan, Civic Coupe, Civic HF and Civic Natural Gas benefit from an updated and refined version of the 1.8-liter I-4 engine that powered the previous generation Civic. The new engine has extensive changes that reduce friction, improve emissions performance and increase fuel economy.

The engine is a Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) 1.8-liter inline 4-cylinder design with 16 valves, i-VTEC, and a dual-stage intake manifold. In the Civic Sedan, Civic Coupe and Civic HF, the engine produces 140 horsepower at 6300 rpm, and 128 lb-ft. of torque at 4300 rpm. In the Civic Sedan and Coupe, the 1.8-liter engine has an estimated EPA city/highway fuel economy rating of 28/39 miles per gallon when equipped with automatic transmission.

Honda Civic Si Powertrain
The 2012 Civic Si is powered by a new 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that is the largest and most powerful of any Civic introduced in the United States. The dual overhead cam (DOHC) engine is an all-aluminum design that uses four valves per cylinder (16 valves total), a high-performance version of the i-VTEC system and a specially tuned high-volume intake manifold. The Civic Si produces 201 horsepower - up four horsepower from the 2.0-liter engine it replaces. The i-VTEC "intelligent" valve-control system, new friction-reducing technologies and extensive weight control measures helps the Civic Si deliver exhilarating acceleration, improved fuel economy and low exhaust emissions.

The new larger displacement engine in the Civic Si delivers peak power at a more accessible 7000 rpm compared to the previous Si engine's 7800 rpm power peak. The engine's increased displacement results in a substantial 22-percent increase in peak torque. The new 170 lb-ft rating occurs at just 4400 rpm, 1700 rpm lower than the previous engine's 139 lb-ft at 6100 rpm. Even with its increase in displacement, horsepower and torque, the 2012 Civic Si has an estimated EPA city rating of 22 mpg (up 1 mpg compared to the 2011 Civic Si) and increases highway fuel economy with a rating of 31 mpg (up 2 mpg compared to the 2011 Civic Si). In addition, the Civic Si engine meets strict Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV-2) emissions standards.

The Honda Civic Si is available exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shifter. Designed to be compact and lightweight, the 6-speed has also been engineered to provide quick and precise shift action. The Civic Si also includes a clutch with a torsion mechanism that enhances refinement in terms of engagement and feel.

Honda Civic Hybrid Powertrain
The newest-generation Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system fitted to the Civic Hybrid uses a gasoline engine as the primary source of power while an electric motor provides additional power and electricity regeneration capability. The new IMA system consists of a larger 1.5-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine connected to a larger, more powerful electric motor and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). A new Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery pack is used to capture and store electricity for the upgraded 23-horsepower electric motor. The new Lithium-Ion battery is more powerful, lighter and more compact than the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery it replaces.

Together, the gasoline engine and electric motor team to produce 110 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 127 lb-ft of torque at 1000-3500 rpm. Compared to the previous generation Civic Hybrid, the new Civic Hybrid has the same peak horsepower, but achieves it at 500 fewer rpm. The new Hybrid has gained 4 lb-ft of torque, and it is spread over a wider rpm range (between 1000 rpm to 3500 rpm) for improved performance during normal city driving.

During acceleration, the engine or the engine and electric motor propel the vehicle. During sustained cruising, the gasoline engine and/or the electric motor can individually propel the vehicle. During braking, the gasoline engine deactivates and the electric motor acts as generator to replenish the Li-Ion battery pack. When the vehicle is at a stop, the engine can enter an idle-stop mode to conserve fuel and reduce emissions - and the engine remains off until the brake pedal is released.

Compared to the previous Honda Civic Hybrid, the fifth-generation Honda IMA powertrain provides improved acceleration at highway speeds, while simultaneously delivering a combined city/highway EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 44 mpg - an increase of 3 mpg from the previous model.

Body
The new 2012 Honda Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe are the most aerodynamically and aggressively styled models in the model's history - and also the most functional and versatile in how most Civic customers like to use their cars. As in past years, both 5-passenger sedan and 5-passenger coupe body styles are available. The sedan design is sophisticated and efficient, while the coupe is more dramatic and exciting. Both are highly aerodynamic, including a sleek windshield angle with narrow A-pillars (and thinner C-pillars in the Coupe) for excellent outward visibility, numerous under-vehicle aerodynamic aids, and even low rolling-resistance tires on all models except Civic Si.

Apart from the headlights, hood and front fenders, no visible exterior body panels, lights, glass, grille or bumpers are shared between the Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe. Differences between models include aggressive front grille, front and rear fascias and other elements for the Civic Si Coupe and Civic Si Sedan, and extensive aerodynamic aids for the high fuel economy Civic HF. However beneath the skin, the underlying chassis construction is the same between the Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe, except that at 105.1 inches, the wheelbase of the Civic Sedan is two inches longer than that of the Civic Coupe.

Civic Sedan Design
Though roomier inside than previous models, the 2012 Civic Sedan adds a sophisticated flair while retaining the Coupe's dramatic styling character. Its four doors provide improved utility, with excellent ingress and egress for all passengers. In back, the trunk lid gracefully meets the rear window and seamlessly ties in with the overall styling of the car. Standard are 15-inch diameter steel wheels with full wheel covers, 15-inch aluminum wheels for the Civic HF, 16-inch aluminum wheels for the Civic EX and Civic EX-L models, and 17-inch aluminum wheels for the Civic Si.

Civic Coupe Design
Everything about Honda Civic Coupe says this is a driver's car, with the short, wide front fascia generating an aggressive overall look. Adding to the Civic's distinctly sporty and dynamic flavor are wide, angular headlights, a bold grille, and fog lamp openings in the lower fascia. A wedge design continues along the Civic Coupe body side, with the hood, windshield and cabin all forming decisive character lines that create a strong sense of motion. The high rear deck further reinforces the Coupe's dynamic wedge styling, while a functional rear lip spoiler and 16-inch aluminum wheels on Civic EX and Civic EX-L models (17-inch wheels on the Civic Si) add to its clear sporting intentions.

Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure
The Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure is a pioneering Honda unit-body construction technology. Introduced to Civic in the 2006 model, it increases the body's ability to disperse crash energy in a frontal collision and is anticipated to help deliver top safety ratings.

Rigid Unit-Body Construction and Energy-Absorbing Crush Zones
The Civic's aerodynamic unit-body structure plays a strong role in helping both the coupe and sedan achieve their expected high fuel-economy and projected top safety ratings, but it also contributes to a smooth, quiet ride and a fun-to-drive character. A rigid body allows for noise and other disturbances to be more efficiently isolated by bushings and other dampers throughout the vehicle.

Increased Use of High-Strength Steel
Both the Honda Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe feature a rigid and lightweight unit-body design made possible by increased use of high-strength steel. The 2012 Civic Sedan now uses 55 percent high-strength steel, compared to 50 percent in the previous generation. This contributes to a 7-percent reduction in body weight compared to 2011 Civic Sedan. Although the body structure is now lighter, static and dynamic rigidity are 10 percent better.

In addition, more slender A-pillars (also constructed of high-strength steel) provide a greater field of view without compromising body strength. Along with a new side mirror shape, the thinner A-pillars also help minimize wind noise at highway speeds.

Aerodynamic Enhancements
The 2012 Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe are just as aerodynamically efficient as their appearance suggests, resulting in improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, improved handling at higher speeds and lower levels of interior noise. The improvements are the result of extensive modeling and testing conducted during the design process. Examples :
  •     A guide under the front bumper directs the flow of air into the engine compartment for cooling.
  •     Lightweight plastic parts under the engine bay, the fuel tank and parts of the rear underbody enhance airflow.
  •     Front spoiler and strakes ahead of the front and rear tires help direct air flow around the tires and wheel wells.
  •     A new flat under-floor significantly improves aerodynamic efficiency by helping air to move over, around and under the vehicle - resulting in a significant 3.4-percent lower coefficient of drag as compared to the 2011 Civic.
  •     Low-drag side mirrors reduce wind noise by minimizing turbulence (Civic EX and Civic EX-L models also include heated side mirrors).

Multi-Reflector Halogen Headlights
All 2012 Honda Civic models are equipped with multi-reflector halogen headlights with an auto-off feature (Auto On/Off on EX-L, Hybrid and Si) for confident nighttime driving, along with a dynamic and dramatic appearance. The auto-off feature automatically turns off the headlights when the key is removed from the vehicle. Inboard mounted halogen high beams offer further nighttime driving confidence with a crisp, bright and focused light beam. The halogen high beams serve double-duty as the daytime running lights (DRL) by operating at a lower voltage. All Civic models include a headlights-on reminder.

Meanwhile Honda Civic Si Sedan and Coupe models add fog lights located in openings below the front bumper. Integrated fog lights are likewise available as a dealer-installed accessory on other 2012 Civic models.

LED Brake Lights on Civic Hybrid
The 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid's taillight system features attention-grabbing LED illumination for the brake lights and soft glowing surface lighting for the taillights. The sculpted, 3-dimensional look of the units adds a distinctive and technical styling element to the rear view of the Civic. Additionally, LED lighting uses less power and longer service life compared to traditional tungsten light bulbs, which is consistent with the vehicle's emphasis on efficiency.

Power Windows
All 2012 Honda Civic models (except for Civic DX) feature power windows with auto-reverse. All trim levels (except the Civic DX) also feature an auto up/down driver's window for added convenience.

One-Touch Power Moonroof with Tilt Feature
Civic EX, Civic EX-L and Civic Si models have one-touch power moonroof actuation with tilt feature that will open or close with one touch of the switch. The moonroof's thin construction allows for maximum headroom and improved comfort. Also included is a sliding sunshade that automatically opens with the moonroof, and the shade can be closed to block sunlight. An auto-reverse feature is built into the moonroof operation.

Security System with Remote Entry
Remote entry and remote trunk entry systems are now standard on all 2012 Civic models except for DX. Using a wave key with integrated remote buttons, all doors can be locked with one touch of the LOCK button. Pressing UNLOCK once unlocks the driver's door, while pressing it twice unlocks all doors. The trunk can also be unlocked by pressing a separate trunk button. The system has an operating range of up to 50 feet.

Cargo Area
Another strength of the new 2012 Civic Coupe and Sedan is impressive storage capacity. The Civic Sedan offers 12.5 cu-ft of storage space (12.1 cu-ft. for Sedan EX-L), exceeding the 12.0 cu-ft trunk volume of the previous generation - an improvement of 0.5 cu-ft or 4.2-percent. The Civic Coupe trunk offers 11.6 cu-ft of storage, a slight increase over the previous model's 11.5 cu-ft. Folding the second-row seatback yields additional room for the storage of bulky items. Civic Hybrid and Civic Natural Gas have a fixed rear seatback.

Conveniently placed latches enable customers to lower the fold-down rear seatback from the trunk. The Civic EX and Civic EX-L and Civic Si models add even more convenience with 60/40 split fold-down rear seatbacks, which allow simultaneous passenger seating and cargo storage.

Exterior Colors
The 2012 Honda Civic offers a dynamic color palette that adds character and boldness to the entire model range. All-new colors for the 2012 Civic Sedan include Dyno Blue Pearl, Cool Mist Metallic and Crimson Pearl. While on the 2012 Civic Coupe, Dyno Blue Pearl and Cool Mist Metallic are new additions to the color lineup. Civic Si Coupe and Civic Si Sedan models add a unique Sunburst Orange Pearl, while the Civic Hybrid comes in Green Opal Metallic. For improved fuel economy, the 2012 Civic uses new tires that are 5-percent lighter with 10-percent improvement to the Rolling Resistance Coefficient (RRC) as compared to the previous Civic's tires. Constructed of low-mass tread material, thinner sidewalls and an optimized structure, the new tires help reduce fuel consumption - all while maintaining comparable durability and projected service life. The Civic HF further reduces the rolling resistance of the tires by an additional 21-percent compared to the standard Civic tires.

Interior
Creative and expressive, roomy and practical - the 2012 Honda Civic interior is as impressive as the body design, while featuring a bold and advanced instrument layout that's unlike anything in the class. The new Civic interior builds on the already sophisticated design of the current generation Civic by adopting a "smart interface" approach. With this approach, the interior is divided into different areas for key instrument displays above the steering wheel, secondary information located lower in the area visible through the steering wheel, and a third area to the driver's right. Overall, the controls are clear and easy to operate, with a cleanly simple layout and highly intuitive operation.

All the shapes, textures and colors work together to create a welcoming contemporary environment that is both visually and tactilely rewarding. Everything the driver needs is close at hand and materials and finishes are as carefully selected as the equipment features. Distinct upper and lower areas of the instrument panel have their own unique materials that create visual zones that add beauty and richness.

Building on the successful packaging on the previous generation, the 2012 Honda Civic Sedan has gained a small amount of interior passenger volume and also made gains in shoulder and hip room. The Civic Coupe gains an increase in front shoulder room. Both the Sedan and Coupe are classified as compact vehicles by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Interior Dimensions
Though the 2012 Civic Sedan is externally the same width and length, it has gained in interior passenger volume by 3.7 cubic feet, and has more front shoulder room and additional front and rear hip room. The Civic Coupe has gained 1.2 inches in front shoulder room. Other interior dimensions are within an inch of the previous generation.

Steering Wheel
The Honda Civic's new 3-spoke steering wheel is a small diameter unit befitting the car's sporty character and accents the vehicle's quick-ratio steering. Civic EX-L and Si steering wheels are leather trimmed for an even sportier look and feel. All Civic models feature a manual tilt and telescope steering column adjustment to better accommodate drivers of various sizes. Civic LX and models above now include audio, i-MID and cruise control buttons. Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® control buttons are included in all models except Civic DX, Civic LX and Civic HF.

Interior Materials
Interior surfaces on the 2012 Civic are designed to be pleasing to the touch, with controls that are ergonomic and operate with precision. Cloth upholstery is standard in most Civic models, with Civic EX-L receiving leather seating surfaces. Leather is also available on the Civic Hybrid.

Seating
Like the previous generation Honda Civic, the 2012 model can accommodate five passengers. The two front seats have been completely redesigned with a more supportive seat construction. The Civic Coupe has deeper side bolsters than the Civic Sedan, and the Civic Si further increases lateral support with firmer side bolsters. Both front seats manually recline, and the driver's seat features a manual height adjustment control. To improve access into the rear seats on the Civic Coupe, the front passenger seat has a one-touch seatback release and slide feature.

A flat rear floor improves passenger comfort by providing considerably more foot room for the middle passenger. To increase storage space, Civic DX, Civic LX and Civic HF models feature a one-piece folding rear seatback, while Civic EX, Civic EX-L, and Civic Si models feature a 60/40 split-folding rear seatback. The Civic Hybrid and Civic Natural Gas have fixed rear seatbacks.

Interior Storage
A redesigned center storage console with a large armrest combines comfort with functionality. Two large cup holders are positioned in the center console, and each door panel has a built-in storage bin and bottle holder. Civic Coupe models have a bottle holder and storage bin integrated into each side of the rear cabin. A spacious glove box and an open compartment located left of the steering wheel provide additional storage.

Climate Control Systems
Civic LX and above models have air conditioning with an integrated micron air-filtration system capable of filtering nearly 100 percent of particulates that are over eight microns in size (the size of most pollen), and approximately 40 percent of particulates down to 0.3 microns (about the size of diesel emissions). The Civic Hybrid has automatic climate control with a secondary compressor, powered by a high-voltage electric motor that ensures the cabin temperature stays at the preferred level during engine idle-stop.

Power Windows, Locks and Keyless Entry
Power windows are standard equipment on all Honda Civic models. Civic LX and above models provide auto-up and down operation on the driver's window. Power door locks with a customizable auto-locking feature are standard on Civic LX and above models. Remote entry is standard on all models except DX, and an engine-immobilizer system is also standard on all 2012 Civic models.

Safety
The 2012 Honda Civic includes a high level of standard safety equipment in every model. The 2012 Civic integrates Honda's most advanced safety technology including the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, two-row side curtain airbags and front side airbags in every model and trim level. The ACE body structure enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. The ACE design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle.
